The third annual ceremony honored 31 students, four alumni, and
a former faculty member.
The third annual ceremony of the Bates
College Scholar-Athlete Society was held May 26 during Commencement
Weekend, honoring four alumni, a former faculty member and 31
members of the Class of 2007. Sean Tuohey,
co-founder of Peace Players International, delivered the keynote
address and received honorary membership to the society. This
year's alumni inductees to the society included Susan Doliner
'81, a former multi-sport standout who is now vice
president for development at Maine Medical Center; Adrienne Shibles
'91, a former basketball player who is currently dean
of co-curricular programs and head girls' basketball coach at Gould
Academy;Benjamin
Robinson '86, a former soccer and track athlete who is
now a senior vice president at Bank of America Corporation;
and William
"Buddy" Schultz '81, a former tennis and basketball
player at Bates who went on to a successful pro tennis career and
is currently the owner of the Cohasset (Mass.) Tennis Club. The
faculty member inductee was retired professor George Wigton,
former coach of men's basketball and tennis at Bates from 1965 to
1999. |
Keynote speaker and honorary society member Sean Tuohey has
garnered publicity from major media outlets around the world as
co-founder of Peace Players International.

Meredith Anderson
Meredith is a neuroscience major from Swampscott, Mass. She is a
dean’s list member and received a thesis grant for travel to
Dartmouth Medical Center. Her thesis title is "The Involvement of
the Anterior Cingulate Cortex in the Cognitive Dysfunction of
Patients with Multiple Sclerosis A Structural MRI Study." Meredith
is a member of the indoor and outdoor track teams. She is a NESCAC
All-Academic team member and a conference and regional qualifier
her junior and senior years.
Martin Benes
Martin is a classical and medieval studies major from Oakland,
Calif. He is a dean’s list member and a four-year letter
winner in Nordic skiing. He is also a team captain. Martin’s
thesis is titled "The Metamorphoses and Ovid’s View of the
Roman World in the Augustan Age." Martin is a NESCAC All-Academic
team member and an Academic All-American. He is the 2007 recipient
of the Lloyd Lux Ski Award.
Mary Bucci
Mary is a political science major from Norfolk, Mass. She is a
member of the dean’s list and the NESCAC All-Academic team;
she is a four-year member of the women’s soccer team. The
title of Mary’s thesis is "One Size Doesn’t Fit All:
The Public Opinion of Women in the 2000 and 2001 Presidential
Elections." Mary earned ECAC and NESCAC Player of the Week honors
on Oct. 30, 2006.
Jennifer Caban
Jennifer is an environmental studies major from Bedford, Mass.
She is a cross country, indoor and outdoor track team member. She
is a dean’s list member and an All-NESCAC, All-New England
and All-American performer in track. Jennifer holds the school
record in the outdoor 800 meters, the indoor distance medley relay
and the indoor 4X800 meter relay. Her thesis is titled
"Possibilities for Mine Closure in Chile: Are Environmental
Financial Assurances Always Appropriate?" Jennifer is co-president
of People Eating Plants, and a member of the Environmental
Coalition.
Laura Clarkson
Laura is a mathematics major from Beverly, Mass. She is a
three-year member of the rowing team. She is a member of both Phi
Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. Laura’s thesis is titled "Wallpaper
Groups: Art and Abstract Algebra."
Patrick Conway
Patrick, an English major from Portland, Maine, is a member of
the dean’s list and a three year tennis team member.
Patrick’s thesis is titled "The 'White' Psyche." He is also
the 2005 recipient of the George L. Wigton Scholarship.
Katherine Farmer
Katherine is a biology major from Madison, Conn. She is a
three-year member of the lacrosse team. The title of her thesis is
"An Analysis of Efficacy and Induction of IgG Sublingual
Immunotherapy." Katherine is a Phi Beta Kappa member and a Dana
Scholar nominee, an IWLCA academic honor role member and the
recipient of the Hughes Student Travel Grant Award.
Griffin Finan
Griffin is a political science major from Bethesda, Md. He was
captain of the baseball team and a four-year letter winner. He is
an Academic All-NESCAC honoree and a recipient of the David Nash
Memorial Baseball Award. Griffin’s thesis title is "The
Impact of Redistricting Commissions: An Analysis of State Senate
Elections from 1998-2004."
Katherine Forester
Katherine is a psychology major from West Windsor, N.J. She is a
four-year letter winner in field hockey. She is a member of the
dean’s list and also the NESCAC All-Academic team and the
National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic team.
Katherine’s thesis is titled "The Prevention of Substance
Abuse in Androscoggin County: Data Collection and Planning Stages
of a Public Health Campaign with Healthy Androscoggin."
Katherine Franklin
Katie is an economics major from New Preston, Conn. She is a
four-year letter winner in both basketball and softball. She is
also a team captain in both sports. Katie is also a dean’s
list member and a member of the College Key. The title of her
thesis is "Salary Inequality in Major League Baseball: A Study on
the Effects of Pay Dispersion on Team Performance." Katie earned
All-NESCAC honors in softball three times, including recognition as
a First Team outfielder twice. In addition, she earned a spot on
the NFCA All-Region First Team. Katie has also been named to the
NESCAC All-Academic team four times (two times each for basketball
and softball) and was awarded the Senior Scholar-Athlete Award from
the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association.
Sara Harris Gips
Sara is an anthropology major from Cape Elizabeth, Maine. She is a
three-year member of the women’s soccer team, a dean’s
list member and a NESCAC All-Academic team member. Her honors
thesis is titled "The Production of Children for Intercountry
Adoption: The Commodification of Guatemalan Women’s Bodies."
Sara received the Anthropology Hamill Senior Thesis Prize. She is a
member of the College Key Club, a Dana Scholar and the 2007
Recipient of the Harward Center Award for Outstanding Community
Volunteerism and Student Leadership. |
Sara Harris Gips represented the Scholar-Athlete Society's Class
of 2007 with her address at the ceremony.

Laura Harris
Laura is sociology major from Mercer Island, Wash. She is a
member of the dean’s list and a four-year letter winner on
the women’s tennis team. She is also the team captain.
Laura’s thesis title is "Single-Sex Education in Public
Schools and the Use of Sociological Data in Determining Legality
and Efficacy." Laura earned Second Team All-NESCAC honors in
doubles in 2006.
James Hauschild
James is an economics major from Marine on St. Croix, Minn. He
is a four-year letter winner in soccer and a team captain. He is a
member of the dean’s list and a NESCAC All-Academic team
member. The title of James’ thesis is "Mexico’s
Comparative Advantage Before and After NAFTA."
Lauren E. Jacobs
Lauren is an English major from Winthrop, Maine. She is a
three-year member of the Nordic ski team, an NCAA Academic
All-American and a NESCAC All-Academic Team honoree. Her honors
thesis is titled "The English and French Versions of the Tristan
and Isolde Legend: An Inclusive Approach to the Literary
Community."
Gary Kan
Gary is a physics and Chinese double-major from Hong Kong. He is
a four-year member of the squash team and a team captain. He
completed two separate theses, entitled "The Study of Polarization
Dynamics of a Multi-Mode Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser"
(for Physics) and "Translation of a Ming Dynasty Vernacular Story"
(for Chinese). Gary is ranked 42nd in the country in squash.
Gregory Little
Greg is an economics major from Hampton, N.H. He is a three-year
tennis team member. He is a member of the dean’s list. The
title of Greg’s thesis is "Share Repurchases."
Ann Lovely
Ann is a chemistry major from Marblehead, Mass. She is a
four-year member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track
teams. She is also a team captain in all three sports. The title of
Ann’s thesis is "Chiral NMR Discrimination of Secondary
Amines Using (18-crown-6)-2, 3,11,12-tetracarboxylic Acid." She has
been elected to both Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. She is the 2007
recipient of the Athletic Department Senior Sportsmanship Award and
has earned distinction on the NESCAC All-Academic team. Ann is also
a Dana Scholar and the recipient of the Chemistry Department Senior
Research Award.
Jacob Mark
Jacob is a biological chemistry major from Los Alamos, N.M. He
is a three-year soccer team member. He has been elected to both Phi
Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi honor societies. Jacob’s thesis title
is "Multiplex Pathogen Detection Technologies: Review of Current
Methods and Presentation of a Novelty Technique MOL-PCR."
Peter Meisel
Peter is a biological chemistry major from Newtown, Conn. He is
a four-year member of the baseball team and a member of the
dean’s list and the NESCAC All-Academic team. He is the 2007
recipient of the David Nash Baseball Award. Peter’s thesis is
titled "Investigation into Beat Rate and B2 – Adrenergic
Receptor mRNA Expression of B-Naphthoflavone Exposed Primary Chick
Cardiomyocyte Cultures."
Hannah Meyer
Hannah is an environmental studies major from Concord, N.H. She
is a four-year letter winner in lacrosse and a team captain. She is
a dean’s list member and received the Coaches Award for
lacrosse. Hannah’s thesis is titled "Improving the Water
Quality of the Androscoggin River: Efforts and Effectiveness of the
Natural Resources Council of Maine and the Androscoggin River
Alliance." Hannah is a recipient of the Barlow Enrichment
Grant.
Kathryn Moore
Kathryn is a biology major from Pelham, N.H. She is a four-year
member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams. She is
also a team captain for all three sports. The title of
Kathryn’s thesis is "Quandary of the Ethical Zoo." Kathryn is
the 2007 recipient of the Bates College Female Athlete of the Year
award. She has received All-American honors in cross country,
indoor track and twice in outdoor track and she is a NESCAC
All-Academic.
Megan Petry
Megan is a psychology major from Crestwood, Ky. She was the 2006
recipient of the Vincent Mulford Service learning grant. She is a
NESCAC All-Academic team member and a four-year field hockey letter
winner. Megan’s thesis title is "The Relationship between
Parental Substance Abuse and Child Welfare: An Examination of the
Lewiston, Maine Family Treatment Drug Court Program." Next year
Megan will be working for Teach for America in Washington, D.C.,
and working towards her master's degree in Early Childhood
Education at George Mason University.
Gabriel Plourde
Gabriel is a political science major from Concord, N.H. He is a
three-year member of the soccer team. His thesis is titled
"Globalization and Sovereignty: Lessons of Migration in the United
States." He is a dean’s list member and earned faculty honors
from Trinity College while studying abroad. He is also a pre-med
student.
Alissa Praggastis
Alissa, a biological chemistry major from Sun Valley, Idaho, is
a three-year member of the Nordic ski team. The title of her thesis
is "Purification of Encephalomyocarditis Viral Proteins 3CD and 3D
Polymerase." She is an NCAA Academic All-American and a NESCAC
All-Academic team member. She is the 2006 recipient of the Lloyd
Lux Ski Award.
Kyle Rushton
Kyle is an economics major from Windham, N.H. He is a four-year
letter winner in soccer and a team captain. He is a member of the
dean’s list and a NESCAC All-Academic team member. The title
of Kyle’s thesis is "Convergence in Transition Economies: A
Neoclassical Approach."
Julia Shelkey
Julia is biology major from Conway, Mass. She is a four-year
member of the indoor and outdoor track teams and a team captain.
She is a dean’s list member and a NESCAC All-Academic team
member, and as a pole vaulter she has earned All-New England and
All-ECAC honors. Her thesis title is "Cranberry Juice Decreases
Adhesion Properties of AAS Expressed by Staphylococcus
Saprophyticus In Vitro." Julia will be doing clinical research at
Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City for the next two years
and hopes to attend medical school in the future.
Sarah Sprague
Sarah is a psychology major from Cleveland Heights, Ohio. She is
three-year letter winner in field hockey. She is a dean’s
list member and she received the Bechtel Award for being a senior
psychology major involved in positive community works. The title of
Sarah’s thesis is "Pediatric Perspectives on Asthma, Anxiety,
and Education: A Comparative Case Study." Sarah is the President of
Within Reach as well as a member of Wellroot and the Robinson
Players; she is also a production manager for the theater and dance
department and a volunteer at Trinity Jubilee Center.
Andrew Tibbetts
Andrew is an economics major from Dedham, Mass. He is a member
of the dean’s list and a member of the indoor and outdoor
track teams. The title of Andrew’s thesis is "The Degree of
Price Efficiency in Emerging Markets: Implications for Fundamental
Indexing. Andrew is the State of Maine Outdoor Champion in the High
Jump and the 400 Meter Hurdles. He is a three-time member of the
All-NESCAC team and the 2007 male recipient of the Lindholm
Scholar-Athlete Award.
Gabrielle Voeller
Gabrielle is a chemistry major from Littleton, Colo. She is a
three-year letter winner in rowing and a team captain.
Gabrielle’s thesis is titled "Atmospheric Deposition in
Acadia National Park: The Use of Ion Exchange Resin as a
Measurement Technology." Gabrielle is also a member of Sigma Xi and
the College Key.
Rebecca Westlake
Rebecca is an English major from Goldens Bridge, N.Y. She is a
four-year member of the indoor and outdoor track teams. She is also
a team captain. She earned NESCAC All-Conference and All-Academic
honors and is the 2005 recipient of the Robert Plumb Award. Her
honors thesis is titled "Voicing and Silencing Death: The
Unspeakable in DeLillo’s Running
Dog, The Names, and White Noise."
After graduation, Rebecca will be working for Teach for America in
Washington, D.C., teaching high school English.
Emily Williams
Emily is a psychology major from Harvard, Mass. She is a Phi
Beta Kappa member and received NESCAC All-Academic honors in three
different seasons. Her thesis title is "Vaginal Birth or Cesarean
Section? Age and Gender Effects." She was a member of the cross
country and indoor and outdoor track teams. She is the female
recipient of the 2007 Lindholm Scholar-Athlete Award. The Bates
Scholar-Athlete Society was created in 2005 to underscore the
College's commitment to the scholar-athlete ideal. The Society
includes seniors nominated by their coaches who have compiled a 3.5
grade point average or have received a special nomination from
faculty and staff for distinguished academic achievement in their
junior and senior years. To be eligible for induction,
student-athletes must participate in a varsity sport for at least
three years.
