WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bates softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader at Brandeis on Friday, falling 6–2 in the opener before dropping an 8–6 decision in game two after leading late.
GAME ONE
Brandeis used a five-run third inning to seize control and defeat Bates 6–2 in the opener.
The Judges broke through with back-to-back home runs in the third, including a three-run shot from 3B Jordan Wallace (Howell, N.J.), to build a 5-0 lead. The home team added another run in the fifth to extend the margin to six.
Bates got on the board in the sixth when CF Zariya Anderson delivered an RBI single, and the Bobcats added an unearned run in the seventh on a throwing error that allowed Delaney Rankin to score from third base.
Rankin was effective in relief for the garnet and white, allowing just one run over the final 3.1 innings. Brigid Gaffny (0-4) started in the circle for the Bobcats. Madeline Jennings (New York, N.Y.) went the distance for the win (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K) as the first-year hurler moves to 6-4 on the season.
GAME TWO
Bates (8-9) built an early lead and carried a two-run advantage into the seventh, but Brandeis rallied for four runs in its final at-bat to complete the sweep.
The Bobcats struck quickly, as Anderson doubled home a run in the first and added a two-run single in the second inning. Bates extended its lead to 5-0 through three-and-a-half frames and pushed it to 6-3 in the sixth on an RBI single from SS Ella Maher.
Brandeis (16-8) chipped away with a pair of runs in the fourth, followed by single tallies in the fifth and sixth, to cut the deficit to 6-4 entering the seventh.
In the final frame, the Judges tied the game on a two-run single by Wallace before CF Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif.) ended it with a two-run home run to left.
Anderson led Bates offensively, going 2-for-3 with career-best four RBI, while Maher and 2B Maddy Miller each recorded two hits in the 10-hit effort.
The Bobcats return to conference play Saturday afternoon with a visit to Bowdoin (17-4). The NESCAC twin-bill commences at noon.
