AMHERST, Mass. — No. 5 seed Bates turned an early deficit into a statement postseason response Saturday, defeating No. 4 seed Amherst, 12–7, in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Championship Tournament at Pratt Field.
The No. 13-ranked Bobcats (11–4) avenged a 20–8 loss to the then No. 17 Mammoths back on March 14 (on the same field) by controlling the second and fourth quarters and pulling away late to secure their first semifinal appearance since 2017.
After trailing 2–1 at the end of the first quarter, Bates erupted for five goals in the second, flipping the game into a 6–3 halftime advantage. Riley McClure scored twice in the quarter as the Bobcats dictated tempo with a 15-shot frame.
Amherst (8–7) responded in the third, closing within one at 6–5, but Bates steadied behind a Charlie Hepp goal off a Liam Rule assist to carry a 7–5 lead into the fourth.
The Bobcats then took control for good. After Amherst trimmed the margin to 7–6 early in the fourth, Bates answered with a decisive 5–1 run to put the game out of reach.
Connor Hartman led all scorers with four goals, while McClure added three. Seven different players found the net for Bates, which outshot Amherst 48–36 and forced 18 turnovers.
Andrew Toland made eight saves in the complete-game win. Miles Schmidt won 11 of his 20 face-off attempts (55%).
Bates advances to the NESCAC semifinals next Saturday, where the Bobcats will face No. 2 seed Tufts at 3:00 p.m. Top-seeded Bowdoin will host the semifinal round and take on No. 6 seed Hamilton in the earlier game at noon.
