LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates baseball team went toe-to-toe with No. 22 nationally ranked Tufts through the first four innings on Friday before the Jumbos took advantage of five Bates errors to run away with a 12-2 win over the Bobcats in NESCAC East action.
With the game scoreless, Tufts' Jesse McCullough reached on a Bates throwing error and came around to score on a James Henshon double. Henshon advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Jack Kamin sacrifice fly to put the Jumbos (19-8, 4-3 NESCAC East) ahead 2-0.
The Bobcats (17-8, 4-6 NESCAC) committed another throwing error to start the top of the sixth, as Tom Pender advanced to second on a wild throw to first. AJ Lysko bunted Pender to third and Owen McKiernan brought him home with a single to center. Cole Bohane stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and broke the game open with a two-run home run to right-center. Tufts added another run in the frame when Henshon got hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a Kamin single.
Now down 6-0, the Bobcats showed some life in the bottom of the sixth against Tufts starting pitcher Cole Donato (6-1) as they plated a pair of runs. Junior captain
Keagan Ryan (Salem, N.H.) got hit by a pitch to start the frame and senior
Jack Margiloff (Rye, N.Y.) doubled him home. Margiloff advanced to third on a ground out and scored when sophomore
David Swift (Yarmouth) hit a sacrifice fly to center.
But the momentum didn't last long as the Jumbos scored six runs in the sixth inning, helped out by three Bates errors. Bohane delivered the big blow of the inning, launching his second home run of the game, a three-run shot out to left.
Bates finished with just four hits against Donato, who threw a seven-inning complete game. Margiloff led the way, going 2-3 a double, a run scored, and an RBI.
The Jumbos tallied 14 hits against four Bates pitchers. McKiernan finished 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Senior
John Tully (Framingham, Mass.) turned in a quality start in the loss, going six innings and allowing just three earned runs.
Bates baseball looks to bounce back Saturday when they host Tufts in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for noon at Leahey Field.
