Balanced Attack, Big Goaltending Lift No. 20 Bates Over Trinity

LEWISTON, Maine — The No. 20 Bates College men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten Saturday afternoon as the Bobcats defeated Trinity College, 14–8, in NESCAC action at Garcelon Field.

Bates improved to 5–0 (2-0 NESCAC) on the season while Trinity moved to 1–1 (1-1 NESCAC).

Reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Andrew Toland delivered another standout performance in goal, stopping a season-high 20 shots to anchor the Bobcats defensively. The Bantams generated heavy pressure throughout the contest, firing 49 shots, but Toland consistently turned them aside to help Bates maintain control.

Offensively, the Bobcats were powered by a pair of five-goal efforts from Connor Hartman and Riley McClure. McClure added two assists for a seven-point afternoon, while Hartman contributed an assist to finish with six points. Charles Lowe orchestrated the offense with four assists in the victory.

Bates struck first with three goals in the opening five minutes behind a pair of tallies from Hartman and one from McClure. Trinity responded with four straight scores to briefly grab a 4–3 advantage late in the first quarter, but the Bobcats closed the frame with consecutive McClure goals to reclaim a 5–4 lead.

The teams traded scores early in the second quarter before Bates seized momentum midway through the period. McClure recorded back-to-back markers to put the Bobcats in front, and goals from Henry McCann and Jack Goldbach extended the margin to 9–6 heading into halftime.

Trinity trimmed the deficit to two early in the third quarter with a man-up goal from Ben Wong (Jr.-Auburndale, Mass.), but Bates answered with a decisive run. Hartman ignited the stretch with an unassisted tally before Xander Frey and Dane Jones scored in quick succession, pushing the Bobcat advantage to 12–7.

Hartman added two more goals in the second half to complete his five-goal performance, including a fourth-quarter strike assisted by Lowe that made it 14–7 and effectively sealed the contest.

In addition to Toland's 20 saves, Bates held advantages in ground balls (52–44) and clears (25-for-29) while limiting Trinity to one goal on three extra-man opportunities.

The Bobcats return to action quickly, hosting Wheaton College in a non-conference matchup Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Garcelon Field
