LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women's lacrosse team erupted for 10 first-quarter goals Wednesday evening and never looked back, defeating Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 20–3, at Garcelon Field.
Bates (2-2) saw 10 different players score in the contest, with
Samantha Collins and
Lauren Wong (three assists) leading the way with four goals apiece.
Lucy Taylor added three tallies while contributing three assists.
Laci Raveis totaled four points with two goals and two assists.
The Bobcats broke the game open early, scoring the first six goals of the night in a span of just 3:17.
Sarah Stavrovich opened the scoring at the 11:30 mark, followed by tallies from
Laci Raveis,
Samantha Collins,
Caroline Keating,
Lucy Taylor, and Collins again as Bates quickly built a 6–0 advantage.
After Saint Joseph's (1-1) cut the deficit to 6–1 with 5:31 left in the opening frame, Bates responded with four more scores before the end of the quarter to make the score 10-1 Bobcats.
Raveis opened the second period with her second of the night, and Taylor followed with a man-down goal to extend the advantage to 12–1. Wong scored twice later in the quarter, including a free-position strike with 3:00 remaining, giving Bates a 14–1 lead at halftime.
The home team continued to add to the lead in the third.
Annie Smith and
Brooke Rosenberg each recorded goals during a pair of man-up opportunities, while
Grace Cassin and Collins also found the back of the net as the Bobcats moved ahead 18–2 entering the fourth.
Haley Wines converted a free-position chance in the fourth period and Taylor capped the scoring with her third goal of the night in the final two minutes.
Caroline Keating recorded a team-high four draw controls for the Bobcats, who held a 19–6 advantage overall in that category. The victors also dominated the shots column, 32-9 (22-6 on frame).
Virginia Avery earned her first collegiate win in goal for Bates, playing the entirety of the first and third periods. Molly Urbonas made three saves as the sophomore played the second and fourth frames.
The garnet and white returns to NESCAC play this Saturday at noon when they visit No. 21 Trinity College.
