HARTFORD, Conn. — A six-run fourth inning proved decisive as Trinity handed Bates an 11-2 loss Friday afternoon in the NESCAC opener for both teams at DiBenedetto Stadium. The setback snaps the Bobcats' nine-game winning streak.
Bates (10-2, 0-1 NESCAC) struck first in the second inning, manufacturing a run on 3B
Tyler Tucker's sacrifice bunt that scored DH
Luke Yoon for a 1-0 lead. Trinity answered in the bottom half, capitalizing on an error and tying the game on a Cole Mascolo double, before the contest turned in the fourth.
With the game even at 1-1, the Bantams sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth and scored six runs on four hits, aided by a Bates error. DH Aidan Stevenson delivered a two-out, two-run single, while 2B Brett Stone also added a two-run knock, to push Trinity in front 7-1.
The Bobcats got one back in the fifth when CF
Keagan Ryan scored on an infield error, but Trinity continued to add on with a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to extend the margin.
LF
Gibby Sullivan provided with a double and an RBI for Bates, while SS
John Federico added two hits and two stolen bases. The Bobcats finished with six hits and drew five walks but left nine runners on base. Yoon reached base on three free passes in the contest.
John Tully (4-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) over six innings. Trinity starter Joe Capano (1-0) earned the win (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K).
Bates will look to bounce back Saturday as the Bobcats and Bantams (10-3, 1-0 NESCAC) conclude the series with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
