Despite Cool Temps, Bobcats Sizzle in Florida Softball Sweep of Rutgers-Camden, Edgewood

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Playing in conditions that more resembled those found back on campus, Bates softball found comfort in the home state feel (47 degrees) Tuesday as the Bobcats shined in a two-game sweep of Rutgers-Camden and Edgewood University (Wis.).

Pitching was the name of the game for the garnet and white as Haley Alden, Delaney Rankin, and Isabella Albro yielded just one run on seven total hits in the day's 14 frames.

Alden (1-0) earned a 3-0 win (4.2 IP, 1 hit, 2 walks, 2 K) vs. Rutgers-Camden (3-4) in her first start of the season, while Rankin picked up the save with 2.1 innings of one-hit relief (4 K).

A Raptors throwing error brought RF Maya Lee (single) around to score from first base in the first inning to give the Bobcats a quick 1-0 lead. That score would hold until the home half of the fifth when SS Ella Maher and CF Zariya Anderson rapped back-to-back RBI singles to push the lead to three.

The aforementioned Lee looks to be settling into the lead-off spot as the junior collected a career-high three hits in the win.

In the nightcap, Anderson's solo home run in the 4th inning, followed by Isabel Bettencourt's two-run shot in sixth, accounted for all of the Bates offense as the Bobcats secured a 3-1 win over Edgewood.

Anderson smoked a line drive over the centerfield fence to snap a scoreless stalemate and put the garnet and white ahead, 1-0. The Eagles (5-6) immediately answered in the bottom of the fourth when DP Lily Mabs crunched a lead-off solo shot to left-center, knotting the score at 1-1.

With one out in the sixth, Maher reached on an Edgewood fielding error before being replaced on the bases on an Anderson fielder's choice. That set the stage for Bettencourt who proceeded to send a 1-1 offering out to left-center, supplying what would prove to be the game-winning clout.

Albro (4.0 IP) struck out four in her first start (second appearance) of the young season. Rankin (1-1) came into a tied affair and fired three innings of no-hit relief to earn the victory. The senior struck out eight batters in her combined 5.1 innings on the day.

The Bobcats (3-2) will enjoy a well-deserved off day on Wednesday before returning to action Thursday with contests vs. the University of Wisconsin-Plattsville (10:00 a.m.) and Endicott College (2:45 p.m.).
