Bates Men’s Tennis Sweeps USM, Edges Brandeis in Sunday Doubleheader

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's tennis team turned in a perfect Sunday in Merrill Gymnasium, opening the day with a 7–0 sweep of the University of Southern Maine before edging Brandeis University, 4–3, in a tightly contested afternoon matchup.

Against USM,  Bates rolled without dropping a set, as three Bobcats earned the first dual-match wins of their collegiate careers.

Will Marshall and Alexander Podoltsev teamed up for a 6–0 victory at No. 3 doubles, while Antonio Rosabal paired with Rocco Regnier for a 6–0 win at No. 2 doubles. Marshall, Podoltsev, and Rosabal later backed that up with straight-set singles victories, marking the first dual-match singles wins of their careers.

Bates carried that momentum into the afternoon against Brandeis, grabbing the early edge by claiming two of three doubles matches. Phillippe Kosyagin and Theo Sardain prevailed at No. 1 doubles 7-6 (8-6) and Nicholas Ozer and James Sacco secured the point at No. 3, 7-6 (9-7).

In singles play, Tylan Ozkuzey authored a convincing victory at No. 3 (6-0, 6-4). Eric Diop followed by delivering a straight-set win at No. 2 (7-5, 7-5) to keep Bates within striking distance as the match tightened. The clinching point came at No. 4 singles, where Rocco Regnier battled through a competitive two-set match to secure the decisive victory, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, and seal the Sunday sweep for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats (2-3) see their next action on Saturday as the garnet and white travels to Medford, Mass. to take on No. 3 Tufts University in what will be the NESCAC opener for both squads. First serve is set for noon.
