PASADENA, Calif. -- Bates women's tennis dropped a 6–1 decision at No. 33 Caltech Thursday night in Pasadena, Calif., with
Iris Westmoreland earning the Bobcats' lone team point through a three-set win at No. 1 singles.
Westmoreland opened singles play with a 7–5 first-set victory at No. 1 over sophomore Carissa Gerung (Portland, Ore.) before Caltech responded with a 6–1 second set. The match was decided by a 10-point super tiebreak, which Westmoreland claimed 10–2 to put Bates on the board against the nationally-ranked Beavers.
Caltech secured the doubles point by winning two of the three matches, though Bates produced a notable result at No. 1 doubles. Westmoreland and
Emelyn Harris edged Gerung and senior Anna Szczuka (Scotch Plains, N.J.), 7–6 (14–12), in an extended tiebreak after the teams split three games apiece through regulation. The Beavers (1-0) earned doubles wins at the remaining two positions to take a 1–0 team lead.
At No. 2 singles, Harris and Szczuka traded sets, with Harris taking the opener 7–5 before Szczuka responded with a 6–1 second set. The match was ultimately decided by a 10-point super tiebreak, which Caltech won 10–7. The Beavers added straight-set victories at Nos. 3 through 6 to close out the match.
Bates (0-2) continues its West Coast trip Friday evening, facing Whittier College at 7 p.m. EST.
