WATERVILLE, Maine -- Bates men's basketball earned its 13th win of the season Sunday with an 89–84 road victory at Colby, the program's highest win total since 2016-17. The Bobcats completed the season sweep of the Mules, securing a sweep of Colby and Bowdoin in the same season (4-0) for the first time since 2005-06.
The Bobcats (13-3, 2-2 NESCAC) erased a three-point halftime deficit and delivered a blistering offensive performance in the second half, shooting 56.0 percent from the field and 60.0 percent from three after the break to outlast Colby (12-4, 1-2 NESCAC).
Colby struck first behind the hot shooting of senior Max Poulton, who scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the opening half. The Mules jumped out to an early 8-3 lead and pushed the margin to eight at 21-13 following a Poulton three at the 6:46 mark.
Bates responded with a quick burst as
Elliott Cravitz drilled a three and
Peter Psyhogeos finished in the paint to trim the deficit to 24-18 (5:45).
The Mules answered with another surge, stretching the lead to 33-25 on a Savion Stroud (Jr.) three with 3:30 remaining.
Jamari Robinson went on to net six points more points for the garnet and white before the half. Psyhogeos capped the first-stanza scoring with a buzzer-beating layup to pull Bates within three at intermission.
Colby opened the second on a 14-6 run to build an 11-point cushion at 54-43 just over 3:14 into the period, threatening to seize full control of the game.
Brady Coyne drilled a three at 14:56 and followed with another at 14:31 to cut the deficit to 56-51.
Chris Bianco knocked down a three at 13:16, and Psyhogeos finished inside at 11:40 to make it a three-point game.
Colby briefly regained momentum when Matthew Lamy (Jr.) buried a three at 11:16, but Bates answered immediately as Psyhogeos drilled a three at 10:14, and
Sean O'Leary followed with another at 9:10, to pull the Bobcats within one (64-63). After Colby pushed the margin to six at the free-throw line at 8:24, Bates responded again behind a
Keenan Sparks three at 7:31 and a Robinson steal-and-score at 7:01. Sparks then tied the game at 69–69 at the line at 6:31.
The teams traded blows down the stretch. Mitch Humphrey (So.) hit a three at 5:36 to give Colby a brief edge (72-69), but Robinson answered with a three at 5:12. Theo Pow (Fy.) finished inside at 4:57 before Bianco tied it at the line with 4:43 remaining. After Mason Dobie (Fy.) put the Mules back in front by a pair (76-74) at 4:31, O'Leary went to the stripe at 4:08 to knot the game again at 76–76, one of five stalemates on the afternoon.
The turning point came at 3:32 when Psyhogeos buried a three to give Bates its first lead of the half at 79-77. O'Leary followed with another triple at 2:58 to push the Bobcats ahead by five, and Bates sealed the win at the foul line as O'Leary converted two free throws at 2:25.
Bates went 7-for-7 from the charity stripe down the stretch.
The road team finished the afternoon shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 48.0 percent from three-point range while converting 25 of 35 free throws. O'Leary, Psyhogeos, and Robinson each scored 18 points to lead the Bobcats. The total marks a new career-best for O'Leary, while Robinson ties his scoring output from a Jan. 4 showdown vs. Colby.
Coyne and Bianco (career-high) added 11 points apiece. Cravitz chipped in eight.
The victors now move to non-conference play for its next outing, a Wednesday night visit to the University of Maine-Farmington. Opening tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
