HARTFORD, Conn. -- Junior
Amy LaBelle and sophomore
Elsa Copeland both found the back of the cage and the No. 8 nationally ranked Bates field hockey team defeated Trinity by a score of 2-1 Saturday morning in NESCAC action.
This marks the third straight season the Bobcats (2-0, 1-0 NESCAC) have defeated the Bantams (1-1, 0-1 NESCAC) and the fourth straight year Bates has won their NESCAC opener.
Bates put the pressure on Trinity from the jump on Saturday, tallying four shots in the first eight minutes. Then the Bobcats earned a penalty corner in the 12th minute.
LaBelle (Barrington, R.I.) delivered the insert and an initial shot by sophomore
Rose Gordon (North Andover, Mass.) got blocked. Junior captain
Haley Dwight (West Newbury, Mass.) picked up the loose ball on the right side of the shooting area. She was able to sneak a pass under multiple Trinity sticks to the far post. LaBelle was waiting and shuffled the ball into the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal.
The Bobcats led 1-0 at halftime, having tallied eight shots in the opening 30 minutes to only three for the Bantams.
Bates took advantage of another penalty corner in the 42nd minute. LaBelle delivered the insert to the top of the circle and Gordon took a shot towards the middle of the cage. Copeland (Toronto, Ontario) redirected the ball for her second career goal, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Bantams got on the board in the 47th minute, with Maeve Hymovitz scoring on a penalty corner with an assist to Alison Gerber. They had a chance to tally the equalizer in the 53rd minute thanks to another penalty corner opportunity. But sophomore goalkeeper
Ava Donohue (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) made the save for Bates. Donohue finished the game with a pair of saves while Dwight recorded a defensive save in the 27th minute.
Bates finished the game with 12 shots, nine on goal. Trinity netted eights shots, four on goal. Hayley Gable tallied five saves for the hosts and the Bantams earned eight penalty corners to six for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats will look to maintain their perfect start to the season when they host No. 17 nationally ranked Lynchburg Sunday at 1 p.m. at Campus Ave. Field.
