BOSTON -- The Bates men's rowing team won both their races against Boston College on Sunday, highlighting a fun morning of competition for the Bobcats on the Charles River.
Led by sophomore coxswainÂ
Darien Chiang (Quincy, Mass.) and junior strokeÂ
Luke Desmaison (New York City), the Bates men's first varsity eight took on the Eagles and beat the BC 1V by more than 20 seconds, crossing the finish line in 6:21.7. Not only that, but the Bates second varsity eight -- led by senior coxswain
Izzy Beck (Upper Montclair, N.J.) and junior stroke
George Fauver (Bedford, N.Y.) -- also outraced the BC 1V, taking second place in the three-boat race in 6:36.7. The Eagles pulled up the rear in 6:42.2.
The Bobcats showed off their depth as well. Led by junior coxswainÂ
Micah Shimizu (Batavia, Ill.) and first-year strokeÂ
Peter Gratwick (Oakland Park, Fla.), the Bates men's third varsity eight also won their race, crossing the line in 6:36.2, more than 20 seconds ahead of the Boston College 2V, who recorded a time of 6:58.1.
Bates women's rowing also competed on Sunday, as they took on the Boston University lightweights. BU was able to get the win, racing to the finish in the 1V race in 6:54.4. The Bobcats were the runners-up in 7:14.2. The Bates women's second varsity eight was able to keep it close against the Terrier 2V, coming in second with a time of 7:24.4. BU won the race in 7:15.19.
The third varsity eight got split into two varsity fours as they took on the BU second varsity four in a three-boat race. BU won in 8:25.3, with the two Bates boats finishing in 8:36.4 and 8:48.2 respectively.
The Bates rowing teams are back in action this Saturday when they will take on the likes of Tufts, Wellesley, Wesleyan, and UMass on the Malden River.
