WATERVILLE, Maine -- Bates College, in the midst of a offensive freeze, found itself on the wrong end of a pair of shutout losses as Colby College blanked the Bobcats by the score of 2-0 in both games of a NESCAC doubleheader Wednesday at the Colby Softball Field.
Currently scoreless in its last 22 innings, Bates has not scored a run in three consecutive contests and has failed to cross the plate in six of its last eight outings.
GAME ONE
In the opener, the Bobcats' offense was limited to singles by CF Zariya Anderson (first inning) and DP Misora Hashiramo (sixth inning) as Colby's KC DeSarno went the distance (7.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K) to earn the 2-0 shutout victory for the Mules.
Bates ace Delaney Rankin (11-5)  collected her conference-leading 16th complete game, but a solo home run by 2B Emma Burnham in the fourth inning gave Colby a 1-0 lead. The Mules added an unearned run in the sixth after a Bates error, a stolen base, and an RBI single by CF Carissa Cassidy.
GAME TWO
The Bobcats recorded seven hits, but left nine runners on base and struck out 10 times, as Colby (14-19, 8-8 NESCAC) completed the sweep of the garnet and white.
Colby scored in the fourth and sixth innings, both times courtesy of RBI singles from 3B Ella Wilcox. Sophia Meade earned the win for the Mules, tossing a complete-game shutout.
Brigid Gaffny took the tough-luck loss for the Bobcats, allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned) over six innings. SS Ella Maher went 2-for-4 at the plate for Bates while 3B Emma Yen doubled and walked.
Bates dropped to 16-16 overall and 7-9 in NESCAC play with the defeats. The Bobcats will now close out the regular season (and look to lock down a postseason berth) when they host a pair vs. first-place Tufts this Saturday on Lafayette Street Field. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
