BOSTON -- The Bates men's rowing second varsity eight continued to impress on Saturday, taking on and beating the MIT heavyweights on the Charles River Basin.
A week after outracing No. 1 nationally ranked Trinity and the MIT lightweights, the 2V upped their level of competition with the MIT heavyweights, currently receiving votes in the IRCA Division I national rankings. Led by senior coxswain
Izzy Beck (Upper Montclair, N.J.) and senior captain stroke seat
Ian Van Loo (Seattle, Wash.), the Bobcats raced to the finish in 6:31.5. The Engineers crossed the finish line 3.5 seconds later in 6:35.
Meanwhile, the men's first varsity eight kept it very close with MIT, with the Engineers narrowly outracing Bates in 6:10.8. The Bobcats crossed the finish line in 6:12.5. The men's third varsity eight race was even closer, with MIT winning in 6:43.5 to 6:44.8 for Bates.
On the women's side, the Bobcats finished runner-up to the NCAA Division I Engineers in every race, with the 1V holding their own with a time of 7:27.3. The MIT 1V crossed the finish line in 7:16.5.
Bates is home Sunday for the President's Cup Regatta against Colby and Bowdoin, held at the Traquina Boathouse in Greene, Maine. The Bobcats are honoring the 2015 women's rowing team, which captured the college's first team NCAA championship 10 years ago. The action starts at 9 a.m.
