BOSTON -- The Bates men's rowing team took on Trinity and the MIT Lightweights on Sunday as part of the Charles River Racing series, with the second varsity eight emerging victorious.
Led by senior coxswain
Izzy Beck (Upper Montclair, N.J.) and senior captain stroke seatÂ
Ian Van Loo (Seattle, Wash.), the Bates second varsity eight raced to the finish in 7:33.2, edging the No. 1 nationally ranked Bantams, who crossed the line in 7:34.6. The Engineers finished a distant third in 8:12.7.
The third varsity eight was able to outrace the MIT Lightweights, but took second to the Bantams in their race. Meanwhile, the first varsity eight took on water at the 1,500-meter mark and did not finish their race. Both the 2V and the 1V faced 20 mph headwinds on the Charles, as the crews battled tough conditions.
The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday when they return to Boston to take on the MIT Heavyweights.
