MALDEN, Mass. -- The Bates men's rowing team competed against IRCA Division I program Marist on Saturday and the first varsity eight won by open water on the Malden River.
Led by sophomore coxswain
Darien Chiang (Quincy, Mass.) and junior stroke seat
Luke Desmaison (New York City), the Bates 1V raced to the finish in 6:00.6, beating the Red Foxes by 13 seconds, as the Marist 1V crossed the line in 6:13.16. While the other Bates boats finished in second place in their one-on-one races, it was still a strong showing, as Bates displayed elite top-end speed.
"The men's varsity 8 put together a really good piece to beat Marist in another weekend of cool temps and challenging conditions," said head coach
Peter Steenstra.
Bates men's rowing heads to Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. to compete against WPI, among others, on Sunday.
