LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates women's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 victory over Smith College on Friday afternoon at Merrill Gymnasium. The Bobcats (3-5) were steady from start to finish, controlling the pace in both doubles and singles play to earn the win.
The afternoon began with Bates sweeping all three doubles matches to take the early lead. The top duo of
Isabella Saul and
Iris Westmoreland posted a 6-3 victory over Smith's Ayla Hauser and Marielle Sauber.
Olivia Gidlow and
Elise Hepburn followed suit with a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles against Natazya Simunyola and Sabrina Wang. At No. 3 doubles,
Ava Lyon and
Lizzie Frekko capped the sweep with a 6-4 triumph over Sophia Dube and Tabitha Bastress.
In singles action, Westmoreland kept things rolling with a 6-4, 7-5 win at the top spot over Hauser. Saul followed with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles against Simunyola. The most competitive match of the day came at No. 3 singles, where Hepburn edged Sauber, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7).
Gidlow delivered a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, while Frekko dominated at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Dube. Lyon rounded out the singles lineup with a comfortable 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Alexa Konstantopoulos.
Smith slides to 1-4 with the loss.
Bates jumps back into NESCAC play Sunday with a 10:00 a.m. home match vs. No. 16 Williams.
