Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. -- Bates College's spring season is officially underway as women's tennis opened its annual Florida trek with a Thursday morning match vs. Division II Saint Leo University. The contest was played at the USTA National Campus.
The Lions, ranked No. 13 in the ITA/DII national poll, collected a 6-1 victory over the Bobcats to improve to 3-0 on the spring. The garnet and white, playing its first dual match since a 5-2 victory at home vs. Nichols on Oct. 6, moves to 1-1 overall.
Despite the final outcome,
Ava Steinberger recorded the Bobcats lone point of the contest with a victory at No. 6 singles. The sophomore edged Saint Leo's Alexandra Warchausky (Jr.-Valencia, Venezuela) by the final score of 6-4, 3-6, 1-0
In doubles action, the Bobcat duo of
Lizzie Frekko and
Ava Lyon proved triumphant in the No. 3 slot, defeating Saint Leo's Nora Catanzarite (So.-Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Sophia Johnson (Fy.-Tampa, Fla.), 6-2.
The Lions secured the team point, however, with victories in the remaining doubles matches. Claudia Borbon Roca (Sr.-Mequinenza, Spain) and Kamilya Shailina (Sr.-Almaty, Kazakhstan) defeated Bates'
Olivia Gidlow and
Iris Westmoreland, 6-0, in the No. 1 position. Madelyn Martin (So.-Saint Johns, Fla.) and Catherine Rabatin (So.-Lancaster, Pa.) defeated
Elise Hepburn and
Isabella Saul by the same 6-0 score at No. 2.
