LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates women's basketball made the most of team captain
Alexandra Long's Senior Day, defeating Tufts 62-46 Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gym, securing the fifth seed in the upcoming NESCAC tournament.
The Bobcats (16-8, 6-4 NESCAC) end the regular season on a six-game winning streak and will travel to fourth-seeded Amherst for a NESCAC quarterfinal against the Mammoths this Saturday at 2 p.m.
On Sunday, Long (Newtown, Pa.) turned in yet another terrific performance, scoring 12 points on 6-9 shooting, dishing out a game-high eight assists, grabbing three rebounds, and blocking two shots.
She was one of four Bates players to finish in double figures scoring, as junior
Elsa Daulerio (Harpswell, Maine) tallied a team-high 13 points, secured a game-high nine rebounds, and tallied three assists. First-year
Lily Brown (Dallas, Texas) provided a big spark off the bench with 12 points on 4-8 shooting. Brown knocked down four three-pointers on five attempts, with three of her three-pointers coming in the fourth quarter as Bates pulled away for the win. Meanwhile, junior
Sophie Spolter (Blacklick, Ohio) added 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Bobcats held the Jumbos (15-9, 5-5 NESCAC) to just 24.2 percent shooting, Tufts' lowest field goal percentage in a game this season.
With Bates trailing 18-16 and just over six minutes remaining in the second quarter, junior
Ava James (Bethesda, Md.) put the Bobcats ahead for good with a deep three-pointer from the right wing.
She followed that up with another three-pointer and Bates led 22-18. The Jumbos trimmed the Bobcat lead to 23-22 at the half, but a big third quarter put the game out of reach for the visitors.
Bates led 27-24 with 8:33 remaining in the third before going on a 9-0 run. Spolter keyed the run -- hitting three mid-range jumpers -- and James added another three-pointer.
Tufts got no closer than within seven points the rest of the way. Stella Galanes paced the Jumbos with 13 points on 4-11 shooting. Monet Witherspoon added 12 points on 4-17 shooting.
The Bobcats shot 43.4% from the field and drilled 7-12 from three-point range.
Bates is the fifth seed in the NESCAC tournament for the first time since 2022, when the Bobcats won the conference championship.
