LEWISTON, Maine — Bates men's basketball continued its historic start to the season on Monday night, rolling to a 101–53 victory over Thomas College at Alumni Gym to move to 8–0 on the year, its best start since opening the 2006–07 campaign with an 11–0 mark.
The Bobcats were in control from the opening tip, shooting 56.3 percent from the field in the first half while building a commanding 52–27 advantage at the break. Bates never let up after halftime, outscoring the Terriers 49–26 over the final 20 minutes and pushing the margin as high as 48 points.
Senior
Chiwer Mayen delivered a standout performance off the bench, recording the first double-double of his career with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Mayen was nearly flawless from the floor, going 9-for-11 shooting, while setting a new single-game scoring high and tying his career-best on the glass.
Bates showcased its depth throughout the night, with 13 different players finding the scoring column and the bench accounting for 53 points. Sophomore
Keenan Sparks tied a career-high with his 14 points, while senior
Brady Coyne knocked down four three-pointers on his way to 13 points. Junior
Babacar Pouye chipped in 12 points and five rebounds, and first-year
Jamari Robinson finished with 10 points.
Defensively, the Bobcats limited Thomas (4-6) to 31.6 percent shooting for the game and forced 21 turnovers, which Bates converted into 24 points. The home side also dominated the paint, holding a 62–20 edge in points inside and doubling up the Terriers in the rebounding battle, 48–24.
The garnet and white now prepare to host Maine Maritime Academy Wednesday at noon in Alumni Gym.
