LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates football's dramatic win over Tufts has caught the attention of the national media as a trio of Bobcats have been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, a weekly honor roll now in its 27th season of recognizing the best performances across the country at each position.
Junior captain
Ryan Lynskey (Cranford, N.J.), junior captain
Ryan Rozich (Cromwell, Conn.), and junior
Michael Spencer (Mansfield, Texas) were all recognized for their standout games at running back, long snapper, and safety, respectively.
This latest honor for Lynskey comes on the heels of him being named the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week and as the winner of the Gold Helmet Award, for the best performance by a football player in NCAA Division II or III in New England this past week. He rushed for 221 yards and a career-high four touchdowns as Bates scored twice in the fourth quarter on Saturday to rally for a 35-28 win at Tufts. He ran the ball a career-high 32 times in the win, averaging 6.9 yards per carry. Lynskey's 24-yard touchdown run up the gut with 58 seconds left in regulation proved to be the game-winner for the Bobcats.
Rozich is also the winner of multiple awards for his showing on Saturday, having already been named the NESCAC Special Teams Player of the Week. When starting long snapper senior
Domenic Virelli (Melrose Park, Ill.) went down with an injury Saturday against the Jumbos, Rozich stepped in. The star linebacker hadn't handled long snapping since high school but Rozich didn't allow the Bobcats to miss a beat, handling the duties on three punts and one PAT. Crucially, he was able to recover a muffed punt deep in Tufts territory late in the fourth quarter, setting up a Bates touchdown as the Bobcats eventually prevailed over the Jumbos.
Spencer and his twin brother
Major Spencer III played through a very difficult personal situation on Saturday and they both shined on the field for the Bobcats.
Michael Spencer tallied six total tackles, including five solo stops in the win. He broke up three passes to give him a team-leading four pass breakups on the season, while Major had the game-clinching interception.
Lynskey, the Spencer twins, and head coach
Matt Coyne were all
interviewed after the game by Frank Rossi of In The D3 FB Huddle.
This is the second time Lynskey has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week in his career, while this is the first such honor for Rozich and Spencer.
The Bobcats (2-3 NESCAC) host Williams (4-1 NESCAC) this Saturday at 1 p.m. on Garcelon Field.
