LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates swimming and diving teams turned in strong performances Friday night in a dual meet with Tufts, highlighted by the Bobcats breaking five Tarbell pool records and one school record.
The Jumbos ended up winning the meet, but the Bobcats were quite competitive, with the No. 10 nationally ranked Tufts men's team tallying 111 points to 97 points for the No. 24 Bobcats. On the women's side, the No. 8 nationally ranked Jumbos won by a count of 146 to 68.
"This was a great meet for us in all aspects," head coach
Peter Casares said. "It builds a lot of momentum heading into the CBB."
Bates Men's Highlights
- The 400-yard medley relay team of sophomore Tim Johnson (Brewster, Mass.), junior Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.), first-year Nate Oppenheim (Easton, Conn.), and junior Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) took first place, setting new school and pool records with their time of 3:15.75. Johnson's split of 48.92 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke to start the relay is also a Tarbell Pool record.
- Somridhivej won the 50-yard breaststroke in a pool-record time of 25.24 seconds.
- Cory won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.31 seconds.
- Sophomore John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa) won the 100-yard freestyle in 45.30 seconds.
- Johnson won the 200-yard IM in 1:53.28.
- The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Cory, Oppenheim, Somridhivej, and Weigel took first place and set a new pool record with their time of 1:21.63.
Bates Women's Highlights
- The 400-yard medley relay team of first-year Kendall Keshen (Santa Barbara, Calif.), sophomore Sarah Palmer (Brunswick, Maine), junior Emma Burke (New Hartford, N.Y.), and junior Lianna Rosman (Bethesda, Md.) took first place with their time of 3:53.56.
- First-year Erin Barisonek (New Vernon, N.J.) won the 50-yard backstroke in 27.26 seconds.
- Palmer set a new pool record and won the 50-yard breaststroke in 29.99 seconds.
- Senior captain Stephanie Tropper (Solon, Ohio) was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.33 seconds, while first-year Taylor Rolefson (Piedmont, Calif.) took third in 55.56 seconds.
The swimming and diving teams are back in action this Friday at 6 p.m. when they host the University of New England and Maine Maritime Academy for Senior Day at Tarbell Pool.
