LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior
Brady Coyne drilled a buzzer-beater from the baseline and the Bates men's basketball team rallied from 12 points down at halftime to defeat the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers by a final score of 66-64 Wednesday night at Alumni Gym.
With the score tied at 64 and 2.8 seconds left in regulation, Coyne (Falmouth, Maine) received the inbound pass near half court from sophomore
Babacar Pouye (Carpinteria, Calif.) and dribbled quickly to the baseline. He took flight for a mid-range fade-away jumper, catching nothing but nylon as the clock expired, with Alumni Gym erupting as it went in.Â
Coyne's incredible shot was made possible by a blistering run for Bates in the second half, as the Bobcats ripped off a stellar 15-4 run over the first five minutes of play after halftime. The flurry of offense kept Bates within reach, as they trailed by only four with less than five minutes remaining. Coyne hit a clutch three to give Bates the lead with 3:44 left on the clock, the first lead Bates had since the 9:43 mark in the first half.Â
Coyne led the Bobcats in scoring, as the junior dropped 21 points, going 5-7 from three.
First-year
Sean O'Leary (Norfolk, Mass.) got the job done on both sides of the ball, as the wing had nine points to go with three blocks on the other end.Â
Bates (8-8) found themselves trailing by a surprising twelve-point margin at the end of the first half. Fifteen of Bates' 23 points came from beyond the arc, twelve of which came in the first ten minutes of the game. After shots from three began to fall less frequently, the Bobcat offense stagnated, allowing UMF (10-8) to take advantage and establish the 35-23 lead by the break that Bates had to dig out of.Â
Junior
Peter Psyhogeos (Yarmouth, Maine) made his presence felt throughout the game, putting up 14 points with eight rebounds in a high-effort performance. Pouye recorded seven rebounds, two blocks, and a steal to round out his nine-point night.
Bate's 25-61 performance from the field was good for a 41 percent mark from the floor, outpacing only slightly Farmington's 40.4%, with the Beavers shooting 21-52.Â
Farmington was led by a 14-point, nine-rebound performance from their forward Dylan Griffin.Â
The Bobcats return to action this Saturday as they hit the road to face off with UMass-Dartmouth at 1 p.m.
