BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Sophomore
Iris Westmoreland impressed in the "A" singles draw as she advanced to the round of 32 on Friday, highlighting the ITA New England Regional Championship for the Bates women's tennis team.
Westmoreland (New Orleans, La.) defeated Colby's Jade Finestone in the round of 64 by a count of 7-6, 4-6, 10-6 before falling to No. 3 seed Fiona Lee of MIT in the second round.
In doubles play, the duo of senior
Ava Lyon (Naples, Fla.) and sophomore
Ava Steinberger (Hockessin, Del.) earned an 8-4 victory over the Babson team of Chaniel Soffer and Elena Keitt in the round of 64, but Lyon and Steinberger's run also ended in the second round when they fell to the MIT team of Jay Lu and Chloe Zeng.
The Bobcats picked up some more wins in the "B" singles draw, with senior
Olivia Gidlow (Cleveland, Ohio) winning 8-2 over Springfield's Alysa Elliott. Sophomore
Elise Hepburn (Vero Beach, Fla.) picked up an 8-5 win over Smith College's Clara Goshgarian and Steinberger beat Colby's Abby Hess by a count of 8-4. Like Steinberger, Lyon backed up her strong doubles outing with a victory in singles, beating Bowdoin's Phoebe Thorne by a score of 8-4. However, all four players fell in the round of 32.
Bates is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 6, when the Bobcats host Nichols College at the Wallach Tennis Center at 9:30 a.m.
