WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Bates College returned to the diamond Sunday as the Bobcats suffered a two-game sweep at Williams College, falling to the host-Ephs by scores of 1-0 and 4-0 in NESCAC softball action.
GAME ONE
Sydney Fleming (Burlingame, Calif.) snapped a scoreless stalemate with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to provide Williams a 1-0 victory in Sunday's opener.
With CF Tayler Wise (Sr.-Belmont, Calif.) on first base after reaching via fielder's choice, RF Kayla Chang (Alameda, Calif.) advanced her teammate into scoring position with a successful sacrifice bunt.Â
Fleming finished the offensive surge by promptly rapping a two-out single to left, bringing home Wise with the game-winner.
RHP Sadie Leonard (Tiburon, Calif.)Â dominated in the circle, firing a complete-game one-hitter to improve to 4-1 on the year. The sophomore struck out 18 Bobcats (5 BB) in the win, permitting just a second-inning single to 1B
Rachel Liazos. Leonard has now struck out 51Â batters in just three career appearances (22.2 IP) vs. Bates, dating back to last season.
Delaney Rankin (1 R, 1 ER, 8 H, BB, 5 K) went the distance (6.2 IP) for the garnet and white.
GAME TWO
Lone runs in the first and third innings, along with a two-spot in the sixth, provided Williams (10-7, 4-2 NESCAC) all the offense it would need en route to the Ephs' 4-0 victory, and second doubleheader sweep of the season (Mar. 17 at California Lutheran).
3B Ronni Ramos (Murphy, Texas) served as the offensive star in the nightcap as the senior supplied run-scoring singles in both the fourth and sixth innings for the victors.
RHP Katie Blanch (Fy.-Rye, N.Y.), now 5-0 for the Ephs, scattered four hits and walked two (7 K) in the complete-game shutout. Fellow first-year,
Isabella Albro (6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, K), took the loss for Bates.
Elizabeth Pellini, getting the start at second base for the Bobcats, accounted for two of the team's four hits in the setback. The first-year is now batting .556 (5-for-9) over her first five games.
Bates (3-12, 0-4 NESCAC) returns to the road on Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. twin-bill scheduled at Middlebury College.Â
