Baseball drops a pair of road games to No. 24 Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates baseball team fell short in a pair of games Saturday at No. 24 nationally ranked Colby, dropping game one of the doubleheader 5-0 and falling 7-3 in game two.

Bates (12-17, 3-9 NESCAC) wraps up their regular season on Wednesday when they take on the University of Southern Maine at 3 pm.

Game One: Colby 5, Bates 0

Thomas Rioux tossed a complete game shutout in game one, as the Bobcats fell 5-0 to the Mules, officially eliminating Bates from qualifying for the NESCAC tournament.

The Bobcats out-hit Colby by a count of 7-4 in the loss. Starting pitcher junior Ian McAslan (Baltimore, Md.) went five innings on the mound for Bates, giving up five runs, but just one was earned, on four hits.

Bates left eight runners on base in the loss. They loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning but Rioux (5-0) got out of it with a strikeout. He struck out five batters and did not walk anyone on the afternoon.

A Clint Flippo two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second gave the hosts a 1-0 lead.

McAslan (1-1) retired the first two batters he faced in the fifth, only for a Bates error to open the floodgates. A single and a walk followed before Noah Reichman broke the game open with a grand slam home run.

Junior Micah Sheats (Niwot, Colo.) pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief of McAslan, but Bates left two more runners stranded in the seventh, as Rioux polished off his first career complete game.

Senior captain Jack Brennan (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior Brandon Biggane (Rensselaer, N.Y.) paced the Bates offense, with Brennan finishing 2-4 at the plate and Biggane going 2-3.

Game Two: Colby 7, Bates 3

The Mules scored three runs in the first inning and held off the Bobcats from there to defeat Bates 7-3 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

Senior Luke Linnehan (Hingham, Mass.) got the start for the Bobcats and pitched four innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Defense continued to hurt Bates, as a two-out error in the first inning kept the frame going for the Mules. Genki LeClair took advantage with a two-RBI double and Ethan Hillenberg followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

Junior Ben Genser (Newton, Mass.) got the Bates offense going in the top of the second with a single to left. Biggane followed with a double and senior Noah Jankowski (Methuen, Mass.) delivered an RBI ground out, scoring Genser. Sophomore Gibby Sullivan (Yarmouth, Maine) singled home Biggane and Colby's lead was down to 3-2.

The Mules added to their lead by scoring a run in each of the next three innings to go up 6-2.

Bates got one back in the top of the sixth inning. Senior captain Chris Cimino (Scarborough, Maine) doubled to start the frame and first-year Henry Prince (McLean, Va.) got hit by a pitch. Genser singled home Cimino and the score stood 6-3. Colby starting pitcher Derek Woods (4-1) struck out the next two batters before Sullivan singled to load the bases. Woods picked up another K to limit the damage to just the lone run for Bates.

Woods scattered 10 hits over seven innings pitched, striking out seven and walking just one to earn the win. Ryan Grecco pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the save.

Cimino went 3-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored to pace the Bates offense. Genser and Sullivan tallied two hits apiece.
