BRUNSWICK, Maine -- A one-out, seventh-inning single through the middle off the bat of first-year
Zariya Anderson plated
Emma Yen from second base as the Bobcats completed a 3-2, game-one comeback victory on what proved to be a wild Sunday night of softball vs. NESCAC foe, Amherst College.
The Mammoths would bounce back to defeat the Bobcats in the nightcap, 10-5, salvaging the split in a twin-bill. The contests were played on Bowdoin College's Pickard Softball Diamond due to poor field conditions on the campus of Bates, caused by the recent excess of rain in the Lewiston-Auburn area.
GAME ONE
Trailing 2-0 after yielding a run-inducing ground out in the second inning, and a RBI base-on-balls in the fourth, the Bobcats kicked off their comeback in the fifth frame. Yen scorched her second inside-the-park home run in as many days, a screamer that parted the Amherst defense in right-center, making the score 2-1 Mammoths.
The Amherst lead would hold going into the home half of the seventh. LF
Sarah Cooke led off the frame with a rocket off the centerfield wall, good for a two-bagger. After a
Maya Lee ground out advanced Cooke to third base, Yen's stellar weekend continued as the sophomore brought in the equalizer with a double to right.
The stage was now set for Anderson's heroics as the Wayzata, Minn. native sent a screaming single into centerfield, bringing in Cooke, kicking off a celebration at the dish.
Delaney Rankin (4-7) earned the complete-game victory, permitting two runs (2 ER) on seven hits (4 BB, 1 K). Dani Torres Werra (2-6) suffered the loss in the circle for the Mammoths (6.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 7 H, BB, 5 K).
GAME TWO
In a second game this saw a combined 15 runs on 22 hits and six total miscues, it would be Amherst (6-17, 3-7 NESCAC) getting the 10-5 victory, thanks to a three-run fifth inning, and a four-spot in the top of the seventh.
3B Sadie Pool (3-for-4), 1B Anna Primozic (2-for-4), and P Annalise Knop (2-for-3, 2 R, 2B) drove in two runs apiece for the victors. Knop (3-4) ultimately helped her own cause as the first-year earned the pitching victory out of the Amherst bullpen (4.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K).
DP
Kennedy Jones went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Anderson (2-for-5) also collected a two-hit effort for the Bobcats. Yen, with a 2-for-4, two-RBI contribution, finished the four-game weekend going 6-for-12 (.500) with four runs scored and four RBI.
Isabella Albro (2-6) took the loss in the circle for Bates.
The Bobcats (6-15, 3-7 NESCAC) returns to action next Sunday when the garnet and white returns to Brunswick, this time as the visiting team, to take on host-Bowdoin in a NESCAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
