LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College men's lacrosse played yet another nail-biter of a contest Saturday as the Cardiac 'Cats lost an agonizing 15-14 decision to visiting Williams College in NESCAC play.
Senior Pearce Glavin broke the Bobcats' hearts as the senior (with four goals on the day) slung in the game-winner with only 10 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Ephs (2-1, 1-0 NESCAC) have had all three of their games decided by one goal. Bates (2-3, 0-2 NESCAC) have seen three contests finish with a one-goal margin, including a pair of overtime affairs.
Bates opened the afternoon by shutting out Williams over the first 15:00 of action, 3-0. The three-goal advantage would hold at 4-1 at the 11:51 mark of the second at which point the Ephs fired off five unanswered to go ahead, 6-4, with 2:30 left before the half.
Williams opened the third quarter with a 3-1 surge to increase its lead to 9-6. Bates showed its mettle by pouring in four-straight to tear back the lead at 10-9 with 4:09 left in the frame. The visitors immediately countered by collecting the game's next three tallies and author a 12-10 cushion early in the fourth (14:16).
Never backing down, the Bobcats shredded the Williams defense for three of the contest's next four goals, resulting in a 13-13 stalemate with just 3:41 to go. Both teams would be booked with 30-second illegal procedure penalties exactly 30 seconds apart from each other, and both teams would take advantage of the opportunity by each securing man-up scores, making it 14-14 with 2:52 on the clock.
The stage was now set for Glavin, who sizzled home a Calvin Caputo helper for the hard-fought triumph.
Glavin finished the day with five points (1 assist) while Caputo contributed a hat trick and three assists. The senior captain now leads Williams with 14 goals over his first three games of the year. Cade Schuckman enjoyed a four-point day (2 goals, 2 assists) while Nick Bates and Finlay MacKnight added two goals and an aider each.
For the Bobcats, senior Wil Masterson paced the squad with five points (four goals).
Riley McClure followed with three goals and an assist.
Connor Hartman and
Javi Werner each contributed hat tricks to the effort.
Miles Schmidt and Williams' Ian Kim matched up for all 32 face-off attempts on the day, with Kim winning 18 of those efforts (nine ground balls).
Cooper Lance collected seven grounders for the garnet and white. Schmidt and teammate
Ben Miller had six each.
Both goalkeepers made an assortment of athletic saves. Matt Wetmore, with seven denials over 60:00, earned the win. Andrew Toland continues to impress in net for Bates as the first-year handled 13 saves in the complete-game performance.
The Bobcats will remain idle until next Saturday when they visit Middlebury at 1:00 p.m. for another NESCAC showdown.
