No. 2 Endicott runs away late to defeat baseball 7-1

BEVERLY, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team grabbed a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning, but the No. 2 nationally ranked Endicott College Gulls prevailed 7-1 over the Bobcats in the fog at North Field.

Starting pitchers John Connolly (1-0) and sophomore Diego Sarabia (Atlanta, Ga.) traded zeroes for the first five innings of the game before the Bobcats (3-3) broke through in the top of the sixth. With one out, sophomore Jack Margiloff (Rye, N.Y. ) tripled to left-center and senior captain Jack Brennan (West Hartford, Conn.) drew a walk. Then with first-year Keagan Ryan (Salem, N.H.) at the plate, Margiloff stole home on a throw back to the pitcher, putting Bates up 1-0.

The Gulls (4-0) responded against Sarabia (0-2) in the bottom half of the frame. John Mulready reached on an error to start the inning. One out later, Dylan Pacheco singled up the middle and a wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet. Danny MacDougall drew a walk and another wild pitch plated the tying run. Nicolas Notarangelo got hit by a pitch to load the bases again, chasing Sarabia from the game. Senior Jack Potash (Stratford, Conn.) entered the game out of the bullpen and got Robbie Wladkowski to hit into a fielder's choice, as the Bobcats cut off the run at the plate for the second out of the inning. But Brendan O'Neil drew a walk to force in the go-ahead run as Endicott grabbed the lead for good.

The Gulls added a run in the seventh and four more in the eighth to run away with the win. Endicott finished with six hits to Bates' four. Sarabia took the hard-luck loss as he did not allow an earned run in five and a third innings pitched. He allowed just two hits and struck out one.

Endicott pitching struck out 17 Bobcats, including 10 from their starting pitcher, as Connelly tossed six innings of two-hit ball for the win.

The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Bard for a doubleheader that starts at noon.
