TUCSON, Ariz. -- The University of Redlands scored nine runs in the fourth inning to rally and beat the Bates baseball team 12-4 Friday at the Tucson Invitational Games.
The Bobcats (8-5) led 4-0 until Redlands (12-11) took advantage of three Bates errors in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Bates starting pitcher senior
Sam Hough (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) lasted 3.2 innings, giving up nine runs, but only one was earned. Senior
Jack Potash (Stratford, Conn.) was solid out of the bullpen, going 4.1 innings and allowing three runs (only one earned) on six hits while striking out three.
Bates got on the board in the top of the first. Senior captain
Jack Brennan (West Hartford, Conn.) led off the game with a single and one out later junior
Brandon Biggane (Rensselaer, N.Y.) doubled him home for a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, sophomore
Gibby Sullivan (Yarmouth, Maine) started things with a single and he promptly stole second base. Sullivan advanced to third on a passed ball and two outs later Biggane came through again, this time with an RBI single.
Hough (1-2) shut down Redlands for the first three innings and the Bobcats added to their lead in the top of the fourth. Junior
Ben Genser (Newton, Mass.) led off with a double and first-year
Henry Prince (McLean, Va.) followed with his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to put Bates up 4-0.
But the bottom of the fourth inning did not go well for the Bobcats, as a Luke De Vries two-RBI single put Redlands ahead for good. The inning started with a couple of hits, but then two errors in three plays by Bates opened the floodgates.
The Bobcat offense was unable to get any more runs across the plate as Jackob Russell (2-1) was outstanding out of the bullpen, tossing five shutout innings to get the win. Redlands finished with 15 hits while Bates tallied 10. The Bobcats committed four errors on the day.
Bates opens NESCAC play next Friday at 3pm when the Bobcats visit Trinity.
