Hampden-Sydney, Va. -- After Thursday's season-opening victory vs. Averett University, Bates College baseball has now lost two-straight as the Bobcats dropped a 13-6 decision Saturday vs. St. Mary's College of Maryland in a contest hosted by Hampden-Sydney College.
The Seahawks, serving as the visiting team, plated a pair of runs in the top of the first, and one more in the third, to take an initial 3-0 lead. Bates (1-2) countered in the home half of the third when SS
Jack Brennan's single brought in CF
Keagan Ryan from second after the first-year walked and advanced to second on a St. Mary's miscue.
In a busy fourth frame, the Seahawks added to their 3-1 lead by bringing around three more runs in the top of the fourth, courtesy of two run-inducing wild pitches and an RBI triple off the bat of RF Derrick Booker (5th yr.-Abingdon, Md.).
The garnet and white put up its own crooked number in the bottom of the inning, tallying four runs on three hits, two walks, and a hit by pitch. The big blow came from 2B
Ben Genser, who crunched a bases-loaded double to pocket a trio of ribbies.
A sacrifice fly and another costly wild pitch represented the St. Mary's scoring in the top of the fifth to make the score 8-5 Seahawks.
Brandon Biggane took matters into his own hands in the home half as the junior right-fielder went deep for his first long ball of the season, providing what would be the Bobcats' final run of the afternoon.
The Seahawks put the win on ice in the top of the eighth by scoring five runs on just two hits. Bates struggled in a stanza that saw everything from a fielding error to three wild pitches, two hit batters, a pair of free passes, a sacrifice fly, and a run-permitting balk.
Nick Russo (Woodstock, Md.) was credited with the pitching victory for St. Mary's as the sophomore collected five innings of one-hit relief (BB, 4 K) for the Seahawks (1-1). Starting pitcher
Diego Sarabia (0-1) took the loss for the Bobcats (3.2 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 5 K).
DH
Gibby Sullivan recorded a multi-hit performance for Bates as the sophomore went 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI in the effort.
Bates will see its next action on Saturday, March 2 as the Bobcats returns north for a non-conference doubleheader vs. Plymouth State University. The twin-bill will be played at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
