LEWISTON, Maine -- Head Coach Deepak Sharma is pleased to announce that the senior tandem of Lizzie Frekko and Ava Lyon will serve as team captains of the Bates College women's tennis program for the 2024-25 campaign.

Frekko, a politics major (religious studies minor) from Lake Forest, Ill., is a three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) scholar-athlete, and a two-time selection to the NESCAC spring all-academic team. The owner of 18-career singles victories over her first three seasons, Lizzie won six of those matches this past spring while playing mostly at the No. 5 position.

"Lizzie embodies the spirit of competition and represents herself, her teammates, and Bates with pride," said Coach Sharma. "She was unanimously voted captain by her peers, a level of respect I fully share for her approach and leadership."

Lyon, an English major from Naples, Fla., owns 10 singles triumphs over her first three seasons with the Bobcats, having seen time in both the No. 4 and No. 5 slots.

"Ava has earned the role of captain through her consistent passion for tennis, dedication to her teammates, and her infectious energy and enthusiasm, which uplift our team," said Sharma. "She competes relentlessly on the court, having set a strong example this fall."

"Accountability, hard work, and teamwork are the pillars of our program, and both Ava and Lizzie show up every day ready to improve themselves and their teammates."

The Bobcats return to action on Thursday, Feb. 20 with matches vs. Saint Leo University (9:30 a.m.) and Rollins College (3 p.m.) at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
