ORONO, Maine -- Sophomore
Sarah Hughes and senior captain
Alexandra Long both finished in double figures scoring but NCAA Division I opponent University of Maine was too effective from three-point range for the Bobcats to handle as the Bates women's basketball team fell 96-39 to the Black Bears Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium.
It was the first time Bates (7-3) had played Maine (4-7) in women's basketball since 1981. The Black Bears hit a school record 19 three-pointers in 38 attempts in Saturday's contest while holding the Bobcats to just 1-13 from long distance.
Olivia Rockwood hit a three-pointer to get the scoring going with 9:24 left in the first quarter as Maine never trailed in the contest. Rockwood went on to score a game-high 20 points on 7-8 shooting, hitting 6-7 from outside.
Bates got the score to 8-4 on a layup from Long (Newtown, Pa.) with 7:30 remaining in the opening stanza before the Black Bears went on a 7-0 run to go up by 11 on a jumper by Caroline Dotsey, who was one of five Black Bears in double figures with 14 points on 5-9 shooting.
Hughes (Rumson, N.J.) hit a corner three with 1:48 left to go in the first on an assist from Long, making the score 15-7. But Sera Hodgson made a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the hosts an 11-point lead after one.
A 17-0 run from the Black Bears in the second quarter put the game out of reach early for Bates as Maine led 44-11 at halftime.
Hughes continued her strong season, tallying a team-high 17 points on 5-12 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Long added 10 points and a team-high four assists. Junior
Elsa Daulerio (Harpswell, Maine) chipped in nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Bobcats are off until Sunday, January 5, when they host Wheaton College for a 5 p.m. tip at Alumni Gym.
