LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior
Brady Coyne tallied a team-high 18 points and sophomore
Babacar Pouye recorded a double-double but the Bates men's basketball team failed to dig out of an 11-point hole in a 72-63 loss to the University of Maine at Presque Isle Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym.
Down 58-47 with 9:26 remaining in regulation, the Bobcats (0-4) went on a 9-0 run. Pouye (Carpinteria, Calif.) got things going with a pair of free throws and a layup. Coyne (Falmouth, Maine) drilled a three with 6:53 to go and first-year
Sean O'Leary (Norfolk, Mass.) followed with a pair of free throws to make the score 58-56.
However, Bates could not get the bucket they needed to tie the game or take the lead. O'Leary hit two more free throws with 3:35 left to trim the deficit to 62-60. Then Bates got a stop on the defensive end, but a Pouye jumper didn't fall and the Owls (4-2) went on a quick 5-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Dwaine Williams led all scorers with 19 points on 7-13 shooting for the visitors. He hit 5-7 from three-point range. Gilbert Jean Mendez added 18 points on 8-10 shooting. Coyne was sharp for Bates, shooting 5-10 from the floor and 4-7 from three-point range. Pouye tallied 16 points on 6-12 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Bates led by as many as eight points in the first half, with junior
Peter Psyhogeos (Yarmouth, Maine) hitting a jumper to put the Bobcats up 15-7 with 14:39 left until halftime. A 10-0 run from the Owls flipped momentum and gave them a 17-15 lead with 12:14 to go. The Owls took the lead for good with 10 minutes to go in the opening half on a Jean Mendez jumper.
UMPI shot very well from the floor, making 50 percent of their shots. Meanwhile, the Bobcats finished 38 percent from the floor.
Bates is back in action Tuesday when the Bobcats visit the University of Southern Maine for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
