CHICAGO -- Junior
Brady Coyne collected a career-high 29 points Sunday as Bates College men's basketball closed out the two-day University of Chicago Midway Classic with an 89-78 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University.
Coyne, whose previous single-game high was 26 points, which he accomplished in a 99-92 overtime victory vs. Colby last Dec. 9, connected on 10-of-14 field goal attempts, including an 8-for-10 showing from the three-point line.
The first half proved to be a back-and-forth affair that experienced five ties and 12 lead changes. OWU's Henry Hinkle (Sr.-Powell, Ohio) drained a free throw to complete a three-point play and provide the Bishops their largest lead of the stanza, a 10-5 advantage at the 14:06 mark. Hinkle's fast break lay-in made the score 26-22 with 7:23 remaining in the half.
Bates proceeded to compile a modest 14-5 run, capped by a Coyne three-pointer, to provide the Bobcats a five-point lead of their own with 2:53 left. With the score knotted at 36-all (2:00), the garnet and white accounted for three of the session's final five points to head into intermission up by one (39-38).
Ohio Wesleyan's offense regrouped in the locker and came out swinging in the second. The Bishops broke a 39-39 stalemate with a 17-4 surge to create a commanding 56-43 surplus 5:11 into the half. The Bobcats answered right back with a 22-7 counterpunch to swipe the lead back (65-63) with 7:48 remaining in regulation.
The two-point cushion would prove to be the final lead of the contest for Bates as a game-tying layup by Jessee Battle (Jr.-Gahanna, Ohio) (7:32), followed by Ryan Smudz's (Sr.-Delaware, Ohio) go-ahead three-pointer (6:27) put OWU up for good. The Bishops (1-1) pushed its advantage to a second-half high 12 points with 40 seconds left on the clock as Hinkle's two free throws made the score 87-75.
The Bishops sizzled from the floor all afternoon, connecting on 30 of 50 field-goal attempts (60%), while also shooting 95% (19-20) from the charity stripe. Bates shot 48.1% from the floor (26-54), including an impressive 16-for-31 (51.6%) from three-point land.
Hinkle topped the victors with 20 points and six assists in 29 minutes. Battle followed with 18 points, five boards, and three helpers. Tony Carter (5th yr.-Cleveland, Ohio) and Phil Wallace (Sr.-Akron, Ohio) each reached double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Grant Nadeau and
Peter Psyhogeos joined Coyne atop the Bobcats' scoring column with 12 points each.
Bates (0-2) now returns to Lewiston to prepare for Wednesday night's home opener as the Bobcats welcome Husson University to Alumni Gym at 7:00 p.m.
