LEWISTON, Maine -- Bowdoin College, behind two goals by first-year Jackie Shores (Arlington, Va.), slipped past host-Bates College Wednesday evening, 2-1, in a crucial NESCAC women's soccer clash for both squads.
The win provides the Polar Bears its first conference win (2-5-3, 1-5 NESCAC) of the fall while the Bobcats, losers of four-straight, also sit at 1-5 in conference play (4-5-1 overall).
Shores put Bowdoin on the board first in the 15th minute (14:23) when the forward, from the Bobcats' penalty line, one-timed a cross from the right side by Kayley Huleatt (Fy.-Rifton, N.Y.).
The Bowdoin lead would hold until the second half (59:09), at which time Bates first-year
Isabelle Bernal netted her team-leading third tally of the year and, most importantly, tied the affair at 1-1.
Mollie Franklin collected her fourth helper of the season on the play as the senior slipped a pass to Bernal, who, after a move or two, ripped a seed from the penalty line area.
With the score now knotted, the Bowdoin tandem Huleatt and Shores struck again to doom the Bobcats in the 80th minute. Huleatt connected a feed with an advancing Shores on the right side. The first-year took a few dribbles before firing an effort from the top right corner of the Bates' penalty box that clanked off the left post and in for the game-winner.
The victors owned a 17-9 cushion in the shot column and a 9-3 advantage on frame.
Charlotte Iannone (Jr.-East Williston, N.Y.) recorded a pair of saves in the complete-game win for Bowdoin. Rudy Reimann (90:00) tied a season-high with her seven saves for the Bobcats.
The garnet and white will return to Russell Street Track & Field this Saturday at noon vs. Tufts.
