NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Senior
Anna Cote scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute on an assist from sophomore
Haley Dwight and the No. 12 nationally ranked Bates field hockey team beat Connecticut College 1-0 Saturday afternoon in NESCAC action.
The Bobcats (9-4, 5-3 NESCAC) earned a penalty corner in the 54th minute and Cote (New Gloucester, Maine) delivered the insert from the near side. She found senior captain
Amanda Zerbib (Larchmont, N.Y.) on the right side of the shooting area and Zerbib fed the ball to senior captain
Anna Lindeis (New Canaan, Conn.) at the top. Lindeis took a shot on goal that was kicked away by Camel goalkeeper Liz Winemaster. The ball didn't go very far though and Dwight (West Newbury, Mass) was able to take a shot of her own and Cote tipped it in from the right side of the cage to put the Bobcats up 1-0. It marks Cote's team-leading eighth goal of the season and Dwight's second assist.
The Camels (6-6, 3-5 NESCAC) had a chance to tally the equalizer in the 56th minute when they earned a penalty corner. But a Maddie Mason shot got blocked by the Bobcats, preserving the lead.Â
Bates controlled most of the game, taking 15 shots, nine on goal, to just eight shots, four on goal, for the Camels. First-year goalkeeper
Ava Donohue (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) made four saves on the way to the first shutout of her collegiate career. Winemaster made eight saves for the Camels.
Both teams earned six penalty corners in the contest.
The Bobcats have now won eight in a row against the Camels. They are back in action next Saturday when Bates hosts Middlebury at noon.
