Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Aaron Morse

Hamilton pulls away late, defeats men's basketball 80-71

CLINTON, N.Y. -- The Bates men's basketball team hung with Hamilton on the road until a late run from the Continentals gave the hosts an 80-71 win over the Bobcats Friday night in NESCAC action.

With the score tied at 47, Owen Kane made a layup with 7:53 remaining in regulation to put the Continentals (7-7, 2-1 NESCAC) ahead for good.

The Bobcats (2-12, 0-2 NESCAC) stuck around, getting to within three points at 58-55 on a pair of free throws from first-year Babacar Pouye (Carpinteria, Calif.) with 4:42 remaining. However, a 7-1 run from the Continentals extended the lead to nine at 65-56 on a Garret Keyhani jumper with 3:17 left. Sophomore Elliott Cravitz (Denver, Colo.) answered with a three to trim the deficit to six, but that's as close as Bates got down the stretch.

Hank Morgan paced the hosts with a game-high 26 points on 9-23 shooting. Teja Singh and Keyhani both tallied 20 points for the Continentals, with Singh making 7-14 from the floor and Keyhani dishing out a game-high five assists.

First-year Marc Begin II (Jacksonville, Fla.) led the Bobcats with 23 points on 7-21 shooting. He made 8-10 from the free throw line. Cravitz drilled all four of his three-point attempts on his way to 15 points on 4-6 shooting. Pouye nearly tallied a double-double with 14 points on 5-8 shooting and nine rebounds.

The game featured seven ties and 15 lead changes. Turnovers proved to be Bates' undoing, as the Bobcats turned the ball over 17 times to Hamilton's 10. Meanwhile, the Continentals scored 17 points off turnovers while Bates netted just five.

The Bobcats led by as many as five points in the first half before the Continentals rallied to take a 30-24 lead at the break.

Bates is back in action Saturday at 3pm when they visit Amherst.
