Lewiston, Maine -- Bates College closed out its inaugural "First Serve" Classic Saturday as Alumni Gym hosted four matches, providing over nine hours of exciting NCAA Division III women's volleyball competition.
The host-Bobcats took on both Maine Maritime Academy and Clark University, falling by respective scores of 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 12-25) and 3-1 (23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 16-25). Other finals on the day included:
Maine Maritime def. Western Connecticut State, 3-2 (25-22, 13-25, 25-20, 23-25, 16-14)
Clark University def. Western Connecticut State, 3-1Â (17-25, 26-24. 25-21, 25-15)
In Bates' opening match of the day, the victorious Mariners collected a hitting percentage of .295 (39 kills) in the win while the Bobcats struggled above the net with a mark of -.026 (18 kills).Â
Ally Hadley led the way for MMA (5-1) with her match-best 10 kills. Teammates Chloe Weeks and Ila Smith each landed eight kills apiece, authoring respective hitting percentages of .538 and .500 in the process. Katie Albritton dished 26 assists while Hunnie Zuber-Stephens added eight digs and five service aces. Sydney Rich accounted for nine digs and a trio each of assists and aces.
Ami Evans paced the home team with her five kills.
Chrissy Chu distributed 14 helpers and
Ellie Asada settled a team-high 11 digs.
Kate Arès and
Bella Lomet both soared for three blocks apiece.
In the final match of the afternoon, Clark edged the Bobcats for wins in the first and second sets. Bates showed its mettle in the third stanza, countering with a 25-22 victory. 12 unanswered points in the fourth-and-final frame would provide Clark with plenty of cushion as the Cougars (6-1) completed a perfect 3-0 showing on the weekend.
Julia Dopazo authored a double-double in the win with 20 assists and 10 digs for Clark. Yvanna Torres enjoyed her own double-double performance with 16 assists and 11 digs.   Camelle Flurry fired off 14 kills while Yumeng Liu settled a match-best 19 digs. Tournament MVP, Sheyenne Williams, clobbered eight digs and had a hand in six blocks for the Cougars.
Evans fell just one dig short of the Bobcats' first double-double performance of the season as the sophomore smashed 17 kills and controlled nine digs. Chu added 29 more assists in the effort while
Eden Lorin and Asada gathered 13 and 11 digs, respectively.Â
As a team, Bates recorded 22 blocks.
Sofia Castiglioni played a role in seven denials with Lomet earning five blocks of her own.
Evans joined Flurry and Willams from Clark, Albritton from Maine Maritime, and Julia Stoliker of WestConn on the All-Tournament Team.
Bates (1-3) returns to action Friday night in Alumni Gym (7:00 p.m.)Â with its NESCAC opener vs. Bowdoin College.
