CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates rowing teams turned in some impressive performances Saturday morning on the Charles River against Simmons, Boston College, and the Harvard Lightweights.
The first race of the day featured the Bates men's first varsity eight against the Harvard Lightweights and Boston College. Led by senior coxswain
Aidan Braithwaite (Milton, Mass.) and first-year stroke
George Fauver (Bedford, N.Y.), the Bobcats out-raced Boston College, taking second with a time of 6:18.8. The Crimson won the race in 5:57.8 and BC finished third in 6:32.5.
The men's second varsity eight took on the Crimson lightweight 2V in a one-on-one race, with the Bobcats finishing in 6:41.3. Harvard prevailed in 6:17.5.
All four Bates women's crews competed in one race, and all four out-raced the Simmons first varsity eight. Led by junior coxswain
Lucy Del Col (Wellesley, Mass.) and senior captain stroke
Casey Winter (Malvern, Pa.) the Bates women's first varsity eight won the race in 7:17. The 2V was not far behind, crossing the line in 7:19.4, while the 3V finished in 7:46.4 and the 4V recorded a time of 8:06.8. Simmons finished last in 8:28.4.
Rounding out the morning of racing, the Bates men's third varsity eight took second to the Harvard Lightweights (6:32.1) in 6:53.4.
"We're really happy with how the crews performed after a week off the water," head coach
Peter Steenstra said. "The women's 2V found a new gear today and really went after the 1V challenging them all the way to the line. The men's varsity eight had a great race with Boston College, pulling away to a 14-second advantage in the last 500 meters."
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday morning when the Bates women take on the Boston University Lightweights and the Bates men compete against the MIT Lightweights.
