Masterson scores four times in men's lacrosse's 19-12 loss at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Junior Wil Masterson scored a career-high four goals in the Bates men's lacrosse team's 19-12 loss at Trinity Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (0-3, 0-2 NESCAC) fell behind 2-0 to the Bantams (1-2, 1-1 NESCAC) before Masterson (York, Maine) got them on the board on an assist from senior Will Schinabeck (Shaker Heights, Ohio) with 9:43 left in the first quarter.

Trinity scored the next two goals to go up 4-1. Then Masterson connected with junior Alex Horowitz (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and the score stood 4-2 with seven minutes left in the opening quarter of action.

But the Bantams had the answer again, scoring the next three goals and going up 7-2 through one. The Bobcats got no closer than four goals the rest of the contest.

The second quarter proved to be an even battle, with both teams scoring four goals. Down 10-4, Bates got a man-down goal from senior captain Malcolm Klingbeil (Powell, Ohio) and another tally from Horowitz with 22 seconds left until halftime, trimming the deficit to 10-6. Unfortunately for Bates, the Bantams answered right away as Andrew Bailey scored with just seven seconds left, giving Trinity an 11-6 lead at the half.

Bates and Trinity traded goals to start the third quarter, with a Masterson man-up goal on an assist from junior captain Jake Johnson (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) making the score 13-8 with 9:14 left. The Bantams responded with a 4-0 run that stretched into the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach.

Harrison Ike turned in a monster performance for the hosts, scoring six goals and dishing out an assist. Ryan Werner added three goals and three assists.

In addition to his four goals, Masterson also tallied two assists for Bates. Johnson finished with two goals and three assists.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday when they head to the Mustang Classic in Owings Mills, Md. to take on Amherst at 11am.
