MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Bates College's spring tour through the Sunshine State continued Wednesday as women's tennis paid a visit to Eastern Florida State College for an exhibition match vs. the Titans.
EFSC, now four matches into its spring season, defeated the visiting Bobcats by an 8-1 score.
Bates' lone win of the contest came in #1 doubles action as the Bobcats' top duo,
Joanna Atwater (Sr.-Short Hills, N.J.) and
Ally Friedman (East Hampton, N.Y.), defeated Helena Jokanovic and Simona Karlsson Hantzis, 8-2.
At #3 doubles,
Isabella Saul (Fy.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Alexandra D'Aquino (Sr.-Weston, Conn.) pushed Paige Noble Lucas and Lucia Lucas Martinez to a tie-breaker before eventually succumbing, 8-7 (7-5).
Over at the #1 position of singles competition, EFSC's Emma Sanchez opened with a 6-1 win vs. Bates' Friedman in set one. The junior countered with a 6-4 triumph in the subsequent frame before falling to Sanchez by a score of 10-2 in the tie-breaker.
At #3,
Laura Littlefield (Ellicott City, Md.), pushed Gloria Barcaro to the brink. Surviving an opening-set loss of 6-7 (7-9), the Bobcat senior rebounded to take the second frame, 6-3. It would be Barcaro's turn to bounce back in the tie-breaker as the EFSC first-year sealed the victory by a 10-6 score in the extra session.
