Lakeland, Fla. -- Bates College's spring season is officially underway as women's tennis kicked off the championship portion of its campaign Monday with a visit to Division II Florida Southern College.
The host-Mocs (1-2), playing their third dual match of the month, completed a clean sweep of the Bobcats, taking all but one set in the outing.
FSC opened the afternoon by claiming each of the three doubles contests. Maxima Ellenberg and Laura Vetter defeated the Bobcats' top tandem of
Joanna Atwater (Sr.-Short Hills, N.J.) and
Ally Friedman (Jr.-East Hampton, N.Y.), 6-4, at #1 doubles.Â
Vivien Charvatova and Neli Sunjic collaborated for a 6-0 win at #2 over the Bates senior duo ofÂ
Grace Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) and
Laura Littlefield (Ellicott City, Md). At #3 doubles, Kennedi Brown and Kelly Klaren handled
Isabella Saul (Fy.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Drew Williams (So.-Guilford, Conn.).Â
In singles action, the match of the afternoon came at the #3 position. Florida Southern's Vetter opened with a 6-4 win vs. Bates' Littlefield in set one. Littlefield leveled the score at 1-1 with a 6-3 triumph in the subsequent frame.Â
It would be Vetter that would prove victorious as the FSC senior secured the tie-breaker, 10-7, en route to the triumph.

Seeing their first tennis action since a 7-2 win vs. Endicott back on Oct. 15, the Bobcats now own a 1-1 record in dual match play. Bates will continue its tour of the Sunshine State on Wednesday with a visit to Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne, Fla. Start time is set for 11:00 a.m.
