WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The seventh seed Bates women's basketball team narrowly fell by a count of 62-55 in the NESCAC quarterfinals to the second seed Williams College Ephs Saturday afternoon in Chandler Gym.
The Ephs (18-7) built a double-digit edge early in the second quarter, and did not allow the Bobcats (13-11) to come within seven points for the remainder of the contest.
Senior captain Meghan Graff (South Portland, Maine) recorded the first basket of the game, but the Ephs scored three straight to go up 6-2. Three consecutive points from senior Kayla Bridgeman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made the difference just one, but Williams proceeded to embark on an 11-3 run to take a 17-8 lead with 2:23 left in the first quarter. When the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, the Ephs remained up nine points.
The Bobcats were held without a field goal for the first six minutes of the second quarter, until first-year Elsa Daulerio (Harpswell, Maine) finished a layup for a 29-15 score. Following Daulerio's basket, the teams each scored eight additional points to close the quarter.
At the half, Ephs held a 50-36 advantage. They shot 40% or better in the opening two quarters, while the Bobcats did not eclipse the 33% mark.
Sophomore Alexandra Long (Newtown, Pa.) tallied five points in the third quarter, but the Ephs had answers to every Bates run. Junior Davina Kabantu (Portland, Maine) contributed a bucket to make the score 42-34 with 4:39 to go in the third. The Ephs, however, closed the quarter on an 8-2 run to bring their lead back to 14 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
The Ephs beat the shot-clock buzzer with a long ball to bring their lead to 16, but Long continued her strong performance to finish an old-fashioned three-point play after drawing a foul on a layup. Another score from Long on the next possession following a defensive stop gave the Bobcats hope — Bates trailed by just 11 with five minutes left, as the Ephs took a timeout to regroup.
Graff and Kabunta combined to score four points in a row and cut the deficit to eight with 2:46 to go, but the Ephs completed the victory over the Bobcats, 62-55.
Long led all scorers with a career-high 19 points on the afternoon, while Graff added 11. In addition to four points, Kabantu finished her day with 10 boards.
