Men's Basketball Campaign Comes to Close for Bobcats With 83-76 Defeat at Wesleyan

Steph Baxter Concludes Collegiate Career with 22-point Showing for Garnet and White

MIDDLETOWN, Conn -- Steph Baxter (Worcester, Mass.), who became the 35th 1,000-point scorer in Bates College men's basketball history last week, concluded his collegiate career Saturday with a team-high 22 points in Saturday's 83-76 NESCAC loss at Wesleyan University.

The senior went 10-for-23 from the floor, connecting on a pair of three-pointers, to finish with 1,045 points as a Bobcat.

In a back and forth first half that experienced eight lead changes and five ties, it would be the Cardinals possessing the lead at halftime with a slight 41-40 edge over Bates.

A Gabe Ravetz three-ball 28 seconds into the second put the home team ahead by four at 44-40. Bates bounced back with a 14-5 run to take the led at 54-49 with 14:53 remaining. The Bobcats' advantage increased to a game-high six points after a Baxter three-pointer put the road warriors up 59-53 at 13:18.

The stanza mirrored the first half of action as the squads proceeded to present three more lead changes and a trio of stalemates over the next 10:05.

With the Bobcats owning a 71-67 lead at 4:01, courtesy of Jahmir Primer (So.-Hempstead, N.Y.) three-pointer, Wesleyan whipped off a tidy 8-0 spurt to go ahead by four (75-71) with 1:30 remaining. The Cardinals controlled the rest of the action, closing out the game by outscoring Bates by a margin of 8-5 en route to the NESCAC triumph.

Ravetz, with the help of five three-pointers, topped all scorers with his 33 points for Wesleyan. Teammate Nicky Johnson added a double-double performance consisting of 27 points (including a 14-16 showing from the charity stripe) and 12 boards in 32 minutes off the bench.

For Bates, the aforementioned Primer followed Baxter in the Bobcats' scoring column with 18 points (four three-pointers). Trace Gotham (Jr.-Medfield, Mass.) added 10 points of his own for the garnet and white.

The Bobcats close the campaign with a seven-game losing streak and an overall record of 7-17 (1-9 NESCAC). Wesleyan moves to 16-8 (7-3 NESCAC) with the win.
