LEWISTON, Maine -- Four different Bobcats netted double-digits in scoring, and senior guard
Davina Kabantu recorded her first collegiate double-double, as Bates College weathered the storm vs. the University of New England Nor'easters, 58-51, Saturday in Alumni Gym.
The victory pushes the garnet and white to 8-1 on the season, and a perfect 4-0 on the home hardwood. UNE drops to 6-4 with the setback.
With both squads locked in a 16-16 stalemate after an initial 10:00 of action, a Kabantu three-pointer at the 7:14 mark of the second closed a 9-2 Bobcat sprint to open the quarter.
Alexandra Long followed with a layup at 5:07, providing the home team a 27-20 cushion.
Long would later put Bates up by a first-half high-water mark of eight points (34-26) as the junior nailed a three-pointer with 11 seconds left before the break.
First-year
Sarah Hughes finished a fast-break lay-in with 5:19 to go in the third, putting Bates ahead by 10 for the second time in the period. Trailing by a score of 40-30, UNE unleashed a 14-6 deluge to climb to within two (46-44) with 1:33 remaining in the session.
The Nor'easters turned up the pressure to open the final period, even taking their first lead since six seconds left in the first, when a pair of Faye Veilleux free throws put the visitors up, 50-48, at 7:32.
A Hughes jumper evened the contest at 50-all at 5:43, and Kabantu connected with what would be the game-winner, a three-pointer with 3:57 to go in regulation. The Bobcats closed the non-conference tilt on a 5-1 spurt to secure the hard-fought triumph.
Kabantu finished the afternoon with 10 points and 10 boards in 24 minutes of action.
Morgan Kennedy paced the victors with 13 points, complemented by her six rebounds and three rejections. Long added 10 points, seven rebounds, and a trio of blocks of her own. Hughes fell one rebound short of her first-career double-double, as the Rumson, N.J. native contributed personal-bests of nine rebounds and 11 points.
Elsa Daulerio, experiencing foul trouble for a majority of the second half, provided a composed performance of eight points (4-for-4 FT) and eight boards in 18 minutes.
The aforementioned Veilleux just missed a double-double for UNE with 17 points and nine boards in 33 minutes. Kaylee Beyor was a force on the glass for the Nor'easters tearing down 17 rebounds in the effort, while completing her own double-double with 11 points.
The Bobcats now remain idle until Wednesday, Dec. 20 when Bates takes on Wisconsin Lutheran College on day one of the Daytona Beach (Fla.) Shootout. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in the
Ocean Center.
