BANGOR, Maine -- A 13-3 run snapped a 36-36 second-half stalemate and provided Husson University a 10-point cushion as the host-Eagles held off visiting Bates College Tuesday evening, 66-58, to remain undefeated on the year.
Husson (5-0) looked ready to run away with the contest midway through the first half as an Eric Ahlers jumper provided the home team a game-high 12-point lead (18-6) with 10:32 remaining in the opening stanza. Fast forward to the 2:46 mark when an
Elliott Cravitz three-pointer concluded a gutsy 24-12 surge by the Bobcats, tying the game at 30-all.
The two squads would alternate hoops over the remaining time before heading into the locker room knotted at 32-32.
The aforementioned Husson run commenced 1:56 into the second half when Andre McCauley hit the first of two free-throw attempts to put the Eagles up by one. It would be McCauley's layup at 14:37 that concluded the rally, leaving Husson with a double-digit advantage, 49-39.
Grant Nadeau's three-pointer sliced the Bobcat deficit to 58-54 with 7:29 remaining, but that would be as close as Bates could get as the Eagles glided to the win by outscoring the garnet and white, 8-4, the rest of the way.
Riles Neff (14 points, 10 assists) and Jeremy Moronta (13 rebounds, 11 points) each authored double-doubles in the Husson victory. Jared Balser (12 points), Ahlers (10 points), and McCauley (13 points) also submitted double-digit scoring totals for the Eagles.
Marc Begin II, returning to the Bates lineup after missing the previous two outings, topped all scorers with a season-high 17 points in 33 minutes off the bench. The first-year guard shot 7-for-19 from the floor.
Babacar Pouye, who fell one rebound short of his first-career double-double (18 points, nine rebounds) Sunday vs. Babson, accomplished the feat on this night with 10 points and 10 boards in 24 total minutes.
Bates (1-6) now travels to Brandeis University this Friday for a 5:00 p.m. non-conference tilt as the Judges host the two-day 2023 UAA Challenge .
