CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --Â The Bates men's rowing team's first varsity eight placed 12th out of 42 crews in the collegiate eights race, pacing the Bobcats Sunday at the Head of the Charles Regatta.

Darien Chiang (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore strokeÂ
George Fauver (Bedford, N.Y.), the 1V navigated the serpentine 4,800-meter course on the Charles River in 15:54.667. The Bobcats finished fifth among NESCAC schools as Tufts won the race in 15:25.428.
Meanwhile, the second varsity eight finished in 34th place in the collegiate eights race with a time of 16:47.961. Led by sophomore coxswain
Micah Shimizu (Methuen, Mass.) and junior stroke
Ian Van Loo (Seattle), Bates placed fourth among the 2V boats in the race.
Bates also entered a boat in the collegiate fours race on Sunday. Led by sophomore coxswainÂ
Melinda Kostrinsky (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore stroke
Wiley Anderson (Ithaca, N.Y.), the Bobcats finished in 38th place out of 43 boats in 19:45.665. Stetson won the race in 17:08.023.
The Head of the Charles is the lone regatta of the fall for the Bates rowing program. The Bobcats will return to action on March 23 when they race the Columbia University lightweights.
