CASTINE, Maine -- A Malachi Reincke layup with two seconds remaining in overtime erased a Bates College 91-90 lead and sealed a dramatic victory for Maine Maritime Academy as the Mariners sent off the visiting Bobcats, 92-91, in a non-conference men's basketball thriller Tuesday.
In one of the most evenly-contested contests one will ever witness, both squads netted an identical 42 points in each half of regulation to force the extra session.Â
A pair of successful Reincke free throws put MMA ahead by 11 points (76-65) with an even six minutes remaining in the second half. The Bobcats, with a true sense of urgency, fired off a frantic 19-5 run (capped by three consecutive free throws by
Brady Coyne) to take a slim 84-82 lead with 13 ticks left on the clock.
To the chagrin of Bates, Markus Ramirez slipped in a layup at the five-second mark to knot the score at 84-84 and send the game into OT.
Opening overtime with a 6-2 spurt, Maine Maritime went up by four (90-86) with 1:20 to go. The Bobcats answered with a
Simon McCormick (Jr.-Whitefield, Maine) three-pointer (1:12) and
Jahmir Primer (So.-Hempstead, N.Y.) lay-in (0:25) to take a final one-point lead, an advantage that ultimately would not hold for the garnet-and-white.
The loss, Bates' third in a row, marks the third overtime defeat on the year for the Bobcats (7-13). The Mariners (9-12) have now won two in a row after snapping a season-long six-game losing streak.
Despite the outcome, a pair of Bobcats established new personal-highs in the scoring column. Primer hit for 14-of-31 from the floor (including four three-pointers), finishing the night with a game-best 34 points. The sophomore also topped all players with five steals in his 39 minutes of action.
Peter Psyhogeos (Fy.-Yarmouth, Maine) connected for a season-high 24 points in 32 minutes, hitting 9-of-12 field-goal attempts and a perfect four-for-four from the charity stripe. The first-year also secured a team-leading eight rebounds. Coyne (Fy.-Falmouth, Maine), providing a perfect shooting performance (3-3 FG, 2-for-2 3PT, 5-for-5 FT) for the Bobcats, finished the evening with 13 points.
Six players eclipsed double-digits for Maine Maritime, led by Curt Heinz and his double-double contribution of 20 points and 18 boards over 45 minutes.
Bates returns to NESCAC play Friday night when the Bobcats welcome Bowdoin to Alumni Gym for an enormous conference contest. First tip is slated for 7:00 p.m.
